Hi all,

Just got my M1 today. I'm looking to take a course within the next month but already started looking for a bike and gear. I have a tendency to do a massive amount of research for getting involved/purchasing anything so here I am reading the forums, and thought I should say hi.

I'm 26 and will be looking at a used yellow Ninja 250. I'm hoping to lend one by end fall, regardless of whether I ride it, hopefully to get a good deal and have more selection. Gear wise I'm thinking of investing into a ~$200-~$300 helmet. I figure my bike will change but helmet I'll keep for awhile and comfort goes a long way (and won't discourage me from riding more often) The rest of the gear I'm going to purchase slowly as the paycheque comes in!

Probably looking at Statafarm for insurance as I've been reading they are the most suitable. Unfortunately, I still only have my G2. I got me G1 back in 2001 and G2 in 2002, lost my G2 in 2007 because of the 5year rule and only got my G2 back last year again in 2010. Hopefully that wont affect my insurance too much.

Feel free to provide any random tips or advice :) I'll be keeping an eye here!

Welcome.

Shop around for insurance. StateFarm is great for SuperSport bikes, but better deals can be had for non-SS bikes, like the Ninja250 you mentioned.

Thanks! I'll look at Jevco too. Hopefully I can get a bike within 60 days, when my M2 kicks in, assuming I did the course. Then I can time the beginning of my insurance for that day. 60 days to do all my research and shopping.

I got my insurace through Jevco. It was $1000 the first year riding, $700 the following year. And I too have a Ninja 250.

Thanks. I will call up Jevo. I see a 500cc for sale as well that I'm interested so might consider that as well if the insurance price is right. I need to make sure I can still pay the mortgage and bills haha. This will be the first I purchase insurance period. I'm owning a bike before I own a car :D

Welcome, try John R. Duffy insurance brokers...speak to Brian. See the banner add on this site.

Just tried Duffy's online quote. It gave me something ridiculous like $3200/year haha. Maybe because I've never owned any previous vehicle and I have no insurance history as a result.

welcome...

SF is great if you're a preffered customer...meaning you have multiple cars, house bike and/or more insured with them. They also charge by cc's so they might quote you almost the same for a 250 as a 500. their cutoff is 600cc. after that their price jumps for newbies.

For gear, walk into any bike shop I would sugest GP Bikes and Royal out in whitby, because you get two stores with huge selection and within walking distance from each other, and see what fits you the best. What works for youu might not for someone else, hence the large variety and selection. One thing I would suggest looking at are ICON's HiVis text jacket and helmet. Each are in the $220 mark, and since you will be new and if youre driving at night those things will light you up like a christmas tree. Oh....and they will match a yellow bike.

Good advice. I'll go to GP and Royal next weekend and pick up a helmet before my course.

I am in fact looking online for yellowish helmets. There aren't that many. The ICON did catch me eye. I also noticed the Shoei Multitech yellow but that's like $500 haha. I'm tempting to splurge more because I imagine I'd be keeping the helmet for a bit vs the bike. As much as I want the yellow one, I'm concerned that the few yellow helmets they have won't fit me really well. I know vanity should never be over comfort or safety, but, it's in fact important part of the many reasons people ride. Anyone know how much it'll cost to paint a helmet solid yellow? That way I won't worry about color and just purchase based on fit.
