Hello, is this thing on?

Hi,

I'm a long time lurker and information siphon-er since I first looked into riding back in 2012. Figured I should finally make an account and add a little back to the community. Wanted to start off by saying thank you for making information available over the years! I've gleaned more than I can remember!

My first bike was a 2012 CBR 250R back in 2014 which I promptly locked the front up on, low-sided, and picked up a season ending hand injury. Since then I've continued to ride year after year and have had the opportunity to take my current bike a CBR 500R from the GTA to Cape Spear Newfoundland, I've also done a modified version of the Top Gear route northwards across Vietnam on an XR150.

For my upcoming endeavour, I'm planning on heading westwards and crossing off riding coast to coast across Canada :) I'm in the process of gathering information on and purchasing hard luggage to turn the CBR into a mini sport-tourer. I'll try to document it all and cover things like approximate shipping costs if I decide to have the bike shipped back due to time constraints.

I've attached a ride report and picture of my bike from the ride out East.

Cheers!

Welcome! Nice ride. Can't imagine touring on a sport bike, but if it works great! Curious about your report form, is that something you created? Never seen anything like that.

Hello and welcome. I did cross Canada in 2019 on CB500x. Used Shad 23s side cases and a stack like you have on the buddy seat plua a 20-23L tank bag. It's tight but t worked fine for solo.

If you are going to ship then ship it west and ride it with the wind coming home - West Jet is shipping bikes now. I flew to Calgary second time then rode for a couple weeks and home.
Kid n I in 2015 flew the bikes to Vancouver then rode around BC & Vancouver Island the back via US - Glacier, Beartooth Pass and Yellowstone.
Just be aware of fire season. I always prefer June for riding. Keep us posted.

Thanks! It actually isn't too bad, the CBR500R is more of a naked/standard bike dressed up as a sport bike. The report format I borrowed from a book I read: "Adventure Motorcycling Handbook" I believe the authors name had Scott in it. Been doing more tarmac than off-road but I'll eventually end up on a dualsport of sorts hopefully.

Your CB500X looks great! Where was that photo taken? I naively forgot about fire season, I might have to rework some of my plans. I was thinking of shipping out West and then riding back but riding there works out for various reasons on my end. I was thinking of poking my way into Glacier NP while I'm in the area, only have heard good things about it.

A couple a weeks ago I recall Motorcycle Express listing the Toronto to Vancouver or vice versa route at around 1800USD, which is a little much for domestic. I can't see the pricing now on their site, I should see if the rates changed.

In terms of luggage I picked up a set of used Kappa K33N side cases which technically don't mount to the CBR but mount to the CBF. The mounting rack should (fingers crossed) be the same as the R&F share most of the same platform from the tank back.

I'm also looking at a set of SH23s that I could get for a good deal with the included mounting rack for the CBR500, it is just missing some fasteners. However, I was planning on going with the kappa k48 top case and I'm not sure if I can mate the Shad 3P mount system to the GIVI rear rack.
I'm getting the Shad stuff for less than what the GIVI side rack would cost me to mount the K33s, might take the gamble and see if they line up. Figure I can put whatever I don't end up using up for sale and not lose too much.

That was taken on BC99 which is one of the best rides evah anywhere.
I hated the way any topcase looked on the CB500 hanging way off the back end.
I have a 39 Shad on the CB300F I ride here.

That said - if you want more space opt for the larger side cases and skip the top case. The weight is much better right behind you on the buddy seat but this does not look too bad.

I've always wondered what bike you rode. Is it considered a sport touring bike?
