Hello Everyone,

Just wanted to say you all have a great forum here - lots of info and great advice. I'm very new to motorbikes, and have recently become interested in getting licensed and buying a bike. I recently got a 2nd job, and was thinking of a better way to get around instead of public transit (ick! in the GTA, and a 2nd car MIGHT be more expensive, so just exploring this as an option.

I figured, I may get my M2 in the spring via a course, and get a moped for now, and if I still like it after a year, I'll consider buying a used bike.

Looking forward to you reading the posts!

P.S. - if anyone has any tips for starters like me, please feel free to advise me. In the meantime, I'll start "searching" the forum..

Welcome to the forum!

There are a bunch of stickied posts in the new riders section that are worth a read through. They will outline a good starting plan. The hot topic is what bike to start on.

Taking the course is also a great idea. Make sure you don't get the limited M2 though if you are planning on a moped or scooter to start... it's better to just go for the full M2 so you have the option to jump to a bike if you so choose.

Welcome!!

Welcome

And tricky's advice is excellent. The sticky threads are the place to start as this where all common questions are dealt with (thouroughly)

Please take the driver training course. You will learn a lot and avoid bad habits.

Have fun :)

Skip the moped stage, just get a small (250 or 125) bike if you want something easy to learn on. Or an older model bike, lots of cheap ones on kijiji. I'm sure after you take the course and have a taste of riding actual motorcycles that you will agree and won't want a moped ;)

I can agree with johnny5 to a point. But you might consider a 150cc vespa scooter ( or similar). They are a perfect commuter bike and ideal for downtown riding. They are just big enough to handle open roads ( like Bayview extent ion). Many have automatic gear shifting which makes riding one a cinch for most people. They are very inexpensive to operate and insure.

Mopeds and low cc scooters are too underpowered in my opinion. And I agree one is likely to outgrow these pretty quickly. They are probably best for those with very short commutes and/or limited commitment to master the skills necessary for safe/competent handling.

Also DO take your full M licence - you will learn manual shifting if you take the rider training course. This way you will be well prepared to ride whatever you want down the road.

Hi there..

I second the opinion on getting a proper M license and not the moped one and perhaps check out the Ninja 250. I know quite a few people that have recently bought one as a starter bike. I've already learned so much about maintaining and owning a bike with this and getting it winter-prepped.

As far as getting licensed go, this is what I'm doing:

1) I've signed up for my RTI course for April (this gives you your M1 exit and gives you an M2 license)
2) I'm going to take my M1 written exam in Feb (since it expires in 90 days)
3) Get my bike safe-tied right after my M1 exam and get it insured and plated on the road so I can screw around with it up and down the street

Good luck! Let me know if you have any questions.

Welcome :)!

Welcome to the world of two wheel excitement! I started out on a moped (1980). I loved the fact I could own the full lane once I got my motorcycle a year later.
