Hello from a new rider

Hello everyone.

I am almost brand new to this forum and motorcycles in general and wanted to say hi. I have a few inquiries I'm hoping you guys can help me with.

A little about me:

I have my M1 of course and have passed my M2 motorcycle course this weekend but won't be eligible for my M2 until next Tuesday (first day I can get it).

Yesterday I purchased my first bike and it's certified and ready to ride from the seller. The bike is a 1993 Yamaha Virago 535. After taking the course I preferred the cruiser/touring style bikes a lot more then the sports style bikes, just my preference.

I haven't drove a car in a few years so I have no insurance yet but have been quoted am in touch with my new insurance broker. After talking to them the best thing for me to do was to wait until I get my M2 before I get fully insured and start riding. This is fine with me as I'm in no rush and want to take it slow.

My question is since I am waiting to get my M2 first before getting insured should I wait to register the bike at the DMV until after I am insured? Or should I go there immediately and register the bike in my name at least? I read somewhere that you had to take it within 6 days or something. I have all the documents such as safety cert (certified yesterday), registration, used vehicle package, permit. I'm quite confused what to do first really and you guys obviously are very keen on this. I was planning on getting the M2, going to my broker to fill out some paperwork (they want me to come in the office) and then going to the DMV then i'm ready to ride, is that accurate?

I hope to be around the forums more now and ride with some of you soon once I get up to speed and learn my bike very well.

Thank you everyone.

Unsure about your question, but welcome to the forum !!

You do not have to bring your ownership in within 6 days. I brought mine in months later with my license and insurance and had no problems. However it is good to get it registered as soon as possible, because if it gets stolen then you're out of luck. You won't be able to claim anything or file a report. Lock it down good and hide it.

Good to know I can do it anytime and based on what you said it makes a lot of sense so I'll do that ASAP. Thanks

Welcome!!
