Heated gear question.

Hi all. I've had a tour master heated liner for years and love it. It hooks up to the bikes battery and It gets super warm. So, I thought I would get a liner I could just wear around town this winter. I ended up buying a gears gen3 liner. I'm really not too impressed. It seems to barely heat up, and the customer support told me I would get 4 hours of use on medium heat, but their own literature that comes with the battery says 2 hours (this is not on the website). And in fact it seems to drain quicker than that. So I'm not sure what to think. Is this typical of portable battery heated clothing? I'm thinking about returning it but their policy has a 20% restocking fee. I would like to hear from others who use this sort of line. I do t know how realistic my expectations are.
 
Doesn't matter what it's "supposed" to do. If it doesn't do what you want it to do, it doesn't "work" for you. Get rid of it.
 
I'm curious whether I can do better, or if this is typical of the technology. Just Iooking for info.
 
You're not going to get a battery powered jacket that works as well as one you plug in to your motorcycle. A battery powered jacket will be fine if you work outside on a construction site or similar job, but on a motorcycle the wind will easily sweep that heat away. I have seen the wild claims that a battery powered jacket will last 9 hours on one charge, but that's on the lowest setting in mild conditions. I would say that if you can get 2 hours of effective heat from a battery powered jacket on a motorcycle you're doing well.

Is there any way to charge and use it at the same time with 12 volt power from the bike? I run heated gear that is powered from the bike, all the cables and controls are a drag but they work all day.

I have the velocity/Firedup heated vest and it works great. I've had it last a full 10 hour day as it doesn't stay on high all day anyway. I've since purchased a second set of spare batteries for the vest and gloves for extra comfort but have yet to use them. I also own a gears genx3 full sleeve heated jacket liner with glove liners and haven't used them since I went cable free.

There is a connector for the bike battery, but I already have a liner for the bike. I tested it last nigh in my living room. It does get somewhere between 3-4 hours on medium, which will serve my purpose most of the time. Warmth is nothing compared to the liner attached to the bike mind you, that would be nice.

I'm assuming you're using the Gerbing troller or similar? I had one for one ride before selling it.

The Warm N Safe wireless troller is infinitely better. One wire when getting on and off the bike. Troller is mounted on top of the brake reservoir for easy on the fly adjustment. One of the best purchases I've made along with the heated gear itself.

I have the same dual troller for my full jacket, gloves and socks, only used the pants once.

The Gears equipment seems to be a relatively low cost option for low heat output for a fairly limited period of time on the bike. If you know and accept this up front you're probably going to be satisfied with performance. If you're hoping this is a clever way to beat the cost of a full Warm 'n Safe type system you probably going to be disappointed in its performance.

The liner itself us quite nic. It's nicer than my tour master , which I really like. I'm sure if I hooked it up to the bike it would be fine. Granted, I could probably have done better.
