Heading down to Harrisburg Pennsylvania this week-end have a question...

[h=2]Thinking of heading down to Harrisburg Pennsylvania this week-end have a few question[/h]
So as the title says...I'm thinking heading down to H PA this week-end, and meet a friend who lives down there, I've made the trip down there by car but never by bike. Leaving around 9 or 10 noon, the total hrs are 8 hrs plus stop probably 1 hr so 9 hours hoping to touch base by 6-7 pm.

This will be my first long haul ever...I may be going alone, a friend is still tentative if he can swing his schedule, but most likely I'm on my own, gonna be the drifter for the few days...

Have a question if someone can help out..

1) I don't have saddle bags on my Honda Shadow 750 so am thinking of either haveing a
back pack or a tie down bag on the back seat. Any idea how to tie it down I don't have the side grills on the back tire.

Any other suggestions or input for the trip would be apprciated, especially if you have ever done this trip.

I have some small throw over leather saddle bags that I zip tie to the rear signal posts and shock spring. I keep the zip ties loose enough for some play but tight enough so the bags don't shift. I don't have the struts installed. Seems to do the job. I get fairly strong zip ties from Princess Auto. You should be able to get a small bungie net for the seat at Royal D or some other bike place.

It's a bit late now but, I did purchase a seat bag on ebay. Kuryakyn Gran Tour that came to about $130 including shipping. I shipped to a US address and picked it up.

Saddlemen has a similar product. Both models don't require a back rest and install fairly easy and come with a waterproof cover. It sits nice and provides a back rest for you.

Maybe surf around for a shop that has something like this in stock and ride down with the back pack until you pick up the seat bag. There has to be a shop just on the other side of the border.

Anyways, food for thought.

just tie your back pack down with this.

Wearing a backpack for that long would be brutal.

You could also buy some straps with a buckle, and strap them to the frame under the seat or loop around the seat.

EDIT

And have fun!! the roads down there are amazing! every corner is clearly indicated with reccommended speed... its like having someone tell you what gear to be in.

Any thought on your route?

I went down to Deals Gap last week and took 219 all the way to it's end and it was a great ride. Leave a little earlier and stay off the interstate and it may be a more enjoyable ride for you. And I agree with the others ditch the backpack idea, take one if need be but strap it to the seat. After riding a while they are quite uncomfortable.

I was going to tak I-190 to 90 to I-390 then 15A all the way down, is there a better way? Here's the google map link

Did a very similar route last weekend to Bloomsburg PA - take 20A south of buffalo to 390 so you miss 90 and the tolls.

Enjoy your ride - it's only 6 hours of riding total - all of the side roads are 55 where the interstates are 65 - look for the side roads and you'll enjoy it more and it really won't take much longer to get there.

I go down there a couple times a year, in the cage. I go across at the falls, 190 south, to 90 WEST one exit to 400 south. Then I take 20A east, through Warsaw. That joins eventually to 390, but there's other southward bound roads to get you there. Not that I'm crazy enough, but no helmets needed in PA.

Enjoy the ride! I've wanted to do it, but need a little more comfort for that long of a ride. . . .
