HD Cable Box for Rogers

Want to put a TV with basic channel for someone in a Long Term Facility but Rogers is charging $18.99 just for the HD box.
Any recommendations what/where HD box to buy that is compatible with Rogers cable service?

Saw used Rogers HD box on Kijiji, will they work? Thanks

Then don’t go with Rogers.
Are they in a decent size town/city? Get an HD indoor antenna and, aside from the upfront cost of the hardware, don’t pay any monthly fees.

Idk much about this stuff but my neighbour gave me an old Rogers HD box
I called Rogers to register the box with them and now it works.
It's one of the old grey boxes (might not even be HD), but he tells me he gets them off Kijiji for $20 or so

My understanding is they have to let you use your own box if you pay for their services.
I wish I new that 3ish years ago with all the money I wasted renting a box for our rarely used 2nd tv

Get this instead as @Katatonic said: https://www.amazon.ca/Biling-Freeview-Amplifier-Stronger-Reception/dp/B07SHL7ZPT/

It's the first link I've found, there are tons of them, some even cheaper.

Rogers has two services, the old legacy DTV which uses the wide (large) Cisco/SA boxes, no modem needed. New is Ignite which is IPTV and goes over their Internet connection (need a modem) and uses very compact "android" looking boxes.

Before you buy one of the old DTV boxes you need to find out if they will still turn them up (I have no idea). If they do you will also need to know the model as some may have been deprecated and removed from the system (why they may be for sale) due to lack of support or features.

As well there's a risk that the box you will buy might have been stolen from Rogers and they will refuse to activate it.

I once bought a Rogers modem to save on the modem rent fees and that's exactly what happened. The guy who sold it to me was a technician and he "borrowed" a few on the way out.

As a few other has stated. I would try the HDTV Antenna first, they often provide more than enough content if reception is decent. If that is a flop then seek our a Roger box.

Good call. We used the ones that stay within the house and it worked fine. Sometimes we would open the windows and leave it in the opening for much better results.

For OTA it will depend on location. If you can "see" (really just facing) the CN tower from the window maybe just an indoor TV antenna {rabbit ears) will get the job done (CTV, CityTV and CBC). If you they are facing the wrong way or there are a bunch of buildings in the way it may still work but you may need a much higher gain antenna (or even outdoor) which may be a no go.

Since it is long term care it really needs to be entirely plug and play and I doubt they will have a dedicated Internet connection to do Roku etc.

@Maniac had a very good point regarding possible stolen boxes, so be careful on this.

Roku?
Amazon Firestick?
Apple TV?
Android STB boxes?
My oops, please ignore my previous post.
From the other posts, I gather that LTC's do not generally have dedicated individual internet.

Many barely have internet for themselves. When my wife used to work in ltc, she would use a rocket stick to get marginal internet access.
