Having two bikes with a student away from home question

Hello I currently have a crf250L that I ride. My son lives 150km away from home, and currently is still insured under it because he rides it once a month when hes down to visit. It doesn't significantly increase my premium either. If i were to insure a second bike on the road such as an old 75 CB 350, would he have to become a primary on the bike? His address is not the same as mine, so would I be able to put him as an occasional driver since he doesn't live anywhere close to me. I just wouldn't want him to have to be a primary considering he would drive it 10 days of the riding season since hes never around. Its just nice to be able to let him ride when he visits. Thanks

If he doesn't have the same address as you, he doesn't have to be listed on the policy at all. You can confirm this with your broker

It depends on what address the bike overnights at the majority of the time. If it is at your home, no real problem. If it is 150km away from your home, things change as your son would effectively be the ONLY rider in that case.

it would be at my house. Does he need to be on the policy since he will be riding it at my location when he's home to visit?

That comes down to individual insurance company policies. Many will still consider a student temporarily away from home during the school year to be living at home for insurance purposes.

There may be discounts available. Start with https://www.insurancehotline.com/ho...ffected-when-your-children-go-away-to-school/ or http://local-insurance.ca/insurance...-your-student-who-is-away-from-home-at-school to get ideas about what to ask for.

Has your son updated his address to where he lives or is it a temporary residence for school?

He maybe technically living out of the house for school but, his primary residence is still your home.

Just talk to your broker and they will guide you.

his address on his license is in waterloo while mine is in Niagara Falls. I am planning to on wednesday, I just wanted to get peoples opinions about the situation.

Since is doesn't live with you, he doesn't have to be listed as a primary driver. If he is already an occasional driver on one vehicle, he's ok for any others. There are some exceptions that a broker can walk you through. I've been out of the business far to long to remember.
