Have you ever 'ratted'?

Let's say you're riding the street, and you see another rider doing something something flagrantly illegal and dangerous - not just something that they could get a pain-in-the-*** ticket for, but something that makes you genuinely concerned for their safety (no helmet, driving against traffic, riding at speed on sidewalk, etc.)... and that, while they're doing this, you get a clear view of their plate (assuming they have one).

Would you (or have you ever) called in to report something like this?

I called in on someone going the wrong way on the 417 in Ottawa once. I don't consider that ratting. That was just retarded. I don't even know how they got on a divided highway backwards.

I called the cops on some lunatic driving a rustang crazily around the neighbourhood. He almost hit me when he flew through a stop sign, then I watched him just basically drive nuts all around in complete disregard for any rules of the road. I actually called 911 to have them connect me to the local cop station, lol, they didn't appreciate that. I was young and forgot to call the operator instead and I didn't have a phone book or anything (it was about 10 years ago).

I called once about a dealer plate car that tried to run me off the highway, nothing happened. Went in person to OPP station to report another driver... asked if I showed them video of the incident if they'll do something.. they said "no because video evidence is not admissible if the court room doesn't have equipment to run it"

So I gave up. Street justice from now on.

No, but my brother-in-law did and the cops gave him a ticket for obscured plate - he had a tinted plate cover on - LOL! If you're going to rat, you better have "clean hands" - LOL!

Snitches get stitches. All jokes aside; I have called the cops on a guy sleeping at the wheel at a red light in the left turning lane, reeking of booze, with open liqour bottles scattered all over his passenger seat. I got out my truck, tapped on his window, woke him up, asked him to pull into the shoppers drug mart parking lot, and take a nap till he sobered up. The driver disregarded my advice, so I dialed 911.

Had a similar situation once. Driving behind some dude in a Malibu, he almost fell in a ditch, twice. He got on the highway and was doing about 50 in the middle lane. Eventually he got on the right lane and kept going on and off the shoulder. Called 911, they had me follow the guy while I was giving them directions as to where he was located. Soon enough I see a cruiser going past me, the guy gets pulled over and they tell me to back off and let the authorities handle it. I was really surprised at how fast the cops got there. It's not snitching if you're doing it out of concern for other people's well being.

You'd call the cops if you saw someone ride down the street without a helmet?

Really...?

What about someone in the backseat of a car not wearing their seatbelt?

I've called before on crazy/drunk/tired drivers before.... If they look like they are going to kill someone in the process of getting from A-B, I'm calling. Never called on a rider...like CG said Darwin will take care of them...usually when a rider is doing something stupid, they are more of a harm to them selves than anyone else.

I called in on a drunk driver once. He hit my mirror as he tried to park. we had a confrontation and he was clearly drunk or high or something. After I realized that I went to the back of his truck to look at his plate number and he hopped in his truck and peeled out. I hopped in my car and went after while I called 911. They nailed him about 3 minutes after I called.

a drunk driver on the road is my business, they are not in control of their vehicle and putting everyone around them at risk.

the OP stated "(no helmet, driving against traffic, riding at speed on sidewalk, etc.)" ... I would never, ever rat on another rider. Riding irresponsible? chances are they wipe out before I get a chance to see them, especially if they are riding drunk.

Dangerous, careless or drunk driving is another story altogether.

I called OPP once for an apparent drunk driver. They were swerving, speeding up, slowing down etc etc. Cops pulled her over and I'm sitting there in my truck. All of a sudden Paramedics show up and take her away in an Ambulance. Turns out she wasn't drunk, she was a diabetic.... Cops told me that afterwards.

riding at speed on the sidewalk... that's putting other people seriously at risk... that kind of goes beyond the let darwin sort them out.. I feel the same way about motorcyclists riding at speed on the sidewalk as bicyclists... sidewalks are for walking speed not riding speed. If one were riding at speed on the side walk i'd have to fight the urge to shove them on to the road or something...

The no helmet thing...well, they're a Darwin Award candidate right there. So really, why bother? As for the rest of the OP's scenarios...? In a heartbeat. Anyone riding like that is genuinely putting other people at risk. F*k 'em.

My outlook on this is if you cannot confront the individual directly, and inform them that you think what they are doing is wrong - then you shouldn't get involved at all. Having someone else deal with the problem because you refuse to intervene directly is cowardice.

That's just my opinion, however. I know the a great portion of you have more bark than bite, and thus resort to a higher authority to deal with such matters.

But if it came to court, and time to let the person you're snitching on face their accuser, most of you wouldn't show up.

Ironically, you're likely to rationalize it with safety, security, morality - and then be the same person posting obscenities when you're ticketed for one thing or another. You're okay with being the one laying down the law, but not the ones on the recieving end of it.

I don't know, I've never had my nose broken for minding my own business. But that's just me. You want to inform on others, then that's your right to do so. But should it come back to bite you, then I imagine you'll be recieving little sympathy. But should it come back to bite you, then I wouldn't imagine you would begin the story with, "well, it started when I called the cops on the guy because I felt the need to inform them.."

1. How exactly do you confront a drunk driver?... How can you have a face-to-face talk if they are driving drunk and swerving all over the road?

2. If you ever caught me driving drunk and therefore risking other people's lives and well being. PLEASE inform authorities and let me be a victim of my decision.
