Is this another $5 Million coffee spill?

Comment:

Looking at the recall notice (NHTSA Recall No. 19V843) it appears that a bad signal from a wheel speed sensor would cause the software to activate the brakes on only one of the rear wheels.

What's HD's net worth?

What a bleeping ridiculous logic to program into the system. HD deserves a serious ass-kicking for letting the logic make it into the wild (and then being corporate aholes and refusing to pay damages when their crap product hurts people).

EDIT:
Also the model designation made me laugh. Damn it's long. FLHTCUTGSE

I didn't watch the whole video. This will be appealed and the final award is likely to be much smaller

I expect so too. Hopefully it is still seven or eight figures so the bean counters agree that it is better to design well than pay out after.

$4.2B as of close today.

$290MM is 7% of market cap, but there's usually corporate general liability insurance in place - these payouts don't come directly out of a company's coffers.
The insurance will likely be a complex shared arrangement as few companies want that much exposure. Settlement discussions will look like a legal convention and take years.

As for the amount, IIRC the McDonald's coffee event settled for about 1% of the original judgement.
