CALGARY—The death of a man in an RCMP cell in southern Alberta has changed the way hand sanitizer is provided in hospitals.

Mounties took a drunken Kurt Kraus to the Vulcan Hospital in May 2010 and a doctor determined it was safe for him to be taken to a cell in nearby Gleichen to sober up.

A nurse had suspected the chronic alcoholic had ingested some hand sanitizer while at the hospital, but no one knew he had also swallowed 10 anti-depressant pills.

Within minutes of being placed in the cell, the 46-year-old stopped breathing.

A fatality inquiry in Calgary heard the man’s death was caused by the combination of drugs and alcohol — his blood alcohol level was more than four times the legal driving limit.

A judge made no recommendations, but noted that hospitals have since removed all portable bottles of hand sanitizer and replaced them with wall-mounted dispensers in public areas.

Ahh the new touchy feely way.
Does said Judge have a spine and some common sense?

So some drug addict ( I feel sorry for this person) or whatever he was, drank hand sanitizer whilst ingesting other substances and this becomes everyone's problem now. So we all have to pay the cost to mount these things now not to mention the convenience factor they provide.

WTF!

In northern communities (I mean really north), they took all the hand sanitizers out of the public/government buildings. I was up north for work and had to liase with the local hospital/clinic, and during my tour of the facility I saw all the mounts on the walls with no pumps. I asked about it, and it's a huge problem that the locals ingest it straight from the pump. They didn't put in a different type of disinfectant because they would still try to get their buzz off of it.

FYI, take the gel hand sanitizer, mix in some salt and let it sit. The ETOH apparently then releases from the suspension and rises to the top... Tried this once and it seemed to work, but nobody was willing to be the guinea pig... But it lit on fire pretty good!

Typical response from the gov't. One guy died because of his stupidity (God have mercy on his soul), now everyone has to be inconvenienced.
He's an alcoholic, he would've killed himself drinking mouthwash too

Why don't the manufacturers add a bitterant??
For labs, alcohols are not taxed because it is used for research. However, the gov't regulate it by having the manufacturers adding a colouring agent & a bitterant.

BTW, anybody tried windshield washer fluid yet?

One of my Slovakian co-workers told me that during his mandatory military service they had to do joint training exercises with the Russians. He told me that at night the Russians would drink the brake fluid from the vehicles.

I assume that no matter of taste deterrent would really deter someone who is hell bent on being drunk from ingesting it... And if it did have some horrible taste to it, that would be left behind on your hands for you to smell all day... Then nobody will be using it.

I'm afraid I can only believe that if I actually see that with my own eyes

Sent from my tablet using my paws

I saw a couple of teens that was out with our group when I was up there huddled over a sled. From a distance I thought something was wrong and they were trying to fix it. I walked over, and realized it looked like they were inspecting the gas tank... Then it clicked in to what was actually going on. One of the elders saw them and gave them hell about it, but they were back at it 10 minutes later.

the futher north i went, pond inlet, the more money they offered me for my mickey, i was up to 250$, almost a bidding war among the locals. i couldn't do it as i would be addressing my self as the only white guy getting off the plane. you know the drill, it's gone in one sitting.

Don't that just give you the warm and fuzzy being a Canadian.
O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
^^^I guess that line is a bit off

I just want to throw it out there, that I've spent a lot of time in northern communities or working with people from those areas, and the majority of them are awesome people if you take the time to get to know them. I've learned a lot from them.
Unfortunately, it's the worst of them that gets the negative attention brought on to the whole community.
I like visiting there, but I sure couldn't live up there like that. We should be proud that some people are able to.
