On this day in 1917 the explosion happened

Every yr after NS had sent a Christmas tree to Boston thanking them for their help and support

Time to think about the guy who stuck to his post in the telegraph office to try and stop trains heading into the chaos, a move that cost him his life.

As you will know, the Marine Museum of the Atlantic, located on Lower Water Street has an excellent display area telling the story of this devastating explosion through both news clippings and photos from the day. Was fascinating to spend a couple of hours looking through the entire museum. Lots of Titanic stuff as well.

Here's a pic I took of a piece of the hull from the ship where the explosion occurred. I believe the notes said it was found roughly 8 miles from the explosion. A pretty substantial piece of metal, twisted and curled like it was tinfoil.

If you're ever in Halifax, I highly recommend a visit to this place!

The biggest manmade explosion till the US started playing with A bombs.
... and indirectly responsible for the formation of The Canadian Institute for the Blind (CNIB).
The explosion blinded about 850 and caused eye and facial injuries on thousands. Halifax is mostly downhill to the harbour, so you could see the blast from almost everywhere in Halifax... so anyone sitting near a window saw the HUGE flash, looked down at the harbour, just in time for the blast front to fill their face with glass shards
