GS500f Adjusted Chain, Clicking sound gone, grinding sound up. DAMN!!!

I was hearing a clicking sound coming from the chain area every time i pull the clutch to shift down shift before stopping or just holding it while going down a road or bridge. I adjusted my chain which had a lot of free play, now i am hearing a grinding sound every time I pull the clutch to down shift. It is getting louder now then it was a week back, it seems to be coming from the chain or the front wheel, infact i can feel it while riding. Any idea what might that be?

Make sure you leave some slack when you adjust your chain to allow for suspension compression when you sit on the bike.

When exactly does the grinding noise happen? Is it as soon as the clutch is pulled in, or when the shifter is pressed down?

If you notice an unusual sound getting louder over time, something is wearing out fast. Get it looked at asap.
Sometimes a sound (i.e. your chain clicking) covers up other sounds that you may not but should have noticed.
Check wheel bearings and other rotating parts for wear.

I left place for free play, it wasn't overly tight.

@ Sabex: It is fairly audible when i pull the clutch and let the bike roll. I hear it very slightly when the bike is engaged and moving in gear.

I tried readjusting it right now, but the sound wasn't getting any better when rolling the tire on the double stand. Also during adjustment, some parts of the chain would become really tight and when i roll the tire other parts were loser. I have the axle nut on the 3rd mark(3rd from where the adjustment nut is) on both sides if that matters. I haven't learned the chain adjustment from anyone, just read the manual and tried it on my own. I guess I would have to seek help on this one.

Does the sound happen if you push the bike with it shut off?

Cant hear much when i turn it off and push it. Also i checked the play on the chain, apparently its really tight in some place and lose in some.

You are supposed to find the tightest spot in the chain and adjust it at that point. There should be about 1 1/4 inches of free play on most bikes (refer to your manual).

If there is a big difference between the tightest point and the loosest then it's time to replace the chain and sprockets.

How much $$ are we looking at here. Damn, lemme do the tightest spot thing to see if it makes a difference. I bought the bike at 23,000 Km in April and just yesterday it crossed 30,000KM mark.

IS YOUR CHAIN well lubed?

Fixed it. Found the tightest spot on the chain and adjusted the play on it, no more Sound at last!
