gs500 engine sound. what does this sound like?

What flywheel?

First thought was a missing spark plug, but a GS500 probably wouldn't even run that way.

Sounds like no compression....like what TK said, missing Spark Plug?

the starter flywheel. both spark plugs are firing. I got some info and a few believe that the flywheel is loose.

Unless your bike is different, the Starter attaches to the Starter Clutch. Unlike a car where the Starter has a "worm-gear" that extends and turns the flywheel and "turns' the engine over.

On your bike there might be a little idler gear that connects the Starter Clutch and the Starter gear which may not have been re-installed properly.

Who did the repair?

He's actually telling the truth - I looked it up and the stator on the GS500 is bolted to a bigass flywheel. I learned something today

Yes, thats exactly how it is for the gs500. I did the repair. and what you say is what I actually believe to be the problem. I remember having an issue with that little gear that connects the starter flywheel to the starter motor gear. I though it was the flywheel itself because I didn't properly prep the crank. I'm going to open it up tomorrow and take a look. I'm hoping its just the little gear, easy fix. will update and thank you for the reply.

Well I guess you learn something new everyday.

My apologies.

Heres a new video after taking off the cover again and inspecting the gears. The bike is starting now as it sounds like, but the whining is still there.

Hmmmm....is it me or is your hand not holding down the starter button while its cranking over? Looks like your right hand moves while its still cranking?

Was there anything wrong in there when you opened it up?

yes I let go of the starter and it kept going. however it did seem to me like it was starting. is it possible that the timing is waaaaay off?

Just thinking out loud - I'm wondering if the starter clutch isn't working for some reason, and the starter is permanently engaged.

Timing way off - that could happen if the, uh, thingy (ignition rotor object - having a major brain fart right now) was somehow installed in an incorrect position, but they are typically keyed to prevent that from happening. And if that WAS the problem, it wouldn't sound like that - your bike would run, but it would sound rough.

unfortunately it cant be the starter motor (what someone told me about how its not like the starter solenoid like in cars)
