So i've got a 1981 Yamaha XJ650 shaft drive. I was riding from Newmarket to Peterborough the other day and i got to Cavan, which about 10 min away from peterpatch, when my bike started to chug. I pulled over into a gas station, I had enough gas, oil was a little below the line on the sight glass, air filter was fine. I started it up and rode the rest of the way home. I notice that there was a grinding sound coming from the front of my bike if i reved it too high. Once i got home i went to do an oil change, figuring i'd check for metal in the oil and see what's up. I opened the Oil tank and smoke was coming out. I know the oil gets pretty hot but should it really be smoking? So i did the oil change, couldn't see anything thing in the oil... took it out for a spin around the block and it seemed fine. I went for a longer ride today, after about 10-15 minutes i noticed it was making that grinding noise again. Mainly when it revs high. So i got back home checked the oil level and it's fine, opened the tank and noticed it was smoking again. It wasn't like bellowing out smoke but there was enough to get me worried something major might be wrong. So i'm looking for anyone input on what they think might be wrong or some thing i should check. I'm a student so I'd like to avoid any expensive mechanic fees I was looking at getting a newer bike next season anyway but i'd like to be able to ride this for the rest of this season and possibly sell it, or chop it up and make a bobber, but that's another story
