Hey all, so I'm planning a trip to the Gran Bahia Coba resort in Mexico. I'm a member and have 'priveleges' there. We already booked our flight and rooms, but now they are telling us we have to pay $150 for each couple to be transported from the airport to the resort. BS!!! Why didn't he tell us this before we booked??? What kind of 'all-inclusive', or VIP treatment is this?

For those who have went in the past, how did you get to the resort? Should I just yell at him and threaten to cancel my booking? Is there a cheaper way from the airport? It's about 1.5 hours out from the airport, a taxi probably won't be much cheaper either.

Hope someone has some experience they can share.

I don't have experience in Cancun, but I know for a lot of Dominican Republic resorts there are bus routes that basically stop outside resorts (like the outer boundaries of them) and go into the city. They're mini-buses locals/staff take. I did this with my gf a couple years ago to do some non-touristy sightseeing. It felt reasonably safe (informed by extensive experience backpacking around C/S America). Cancun SHOULD be pretty safe. Google searching should yield some worthy results?

Edit: Check out this link: http://home.pcisys.net/~ronlee/Scuba/Cozumel/Aug2001/CancunCozumel.htm

If you're going to shell out $150.00, make sure it's roundtrip, and even consider going private? Research tells me it's about $130-160 and you don't need to stop at other resorts, ie could save you an hour.

That is normal practice. When you book with the hotel direct the all inclusive is at the hotel only.

You only get the transportation included when you book with a vacation company such as air canada vacations, west jet vacations, sunwing destinations.

The price is not unreasonable, unless you are all arriving at the same time.

I've used these people and they are the most often recommended in the area. A great company for the transfer, or for their many tours. http://www.usa-transfers.com

If many of you are arriving at the airport at the same time, I'd just book with USA transfers and it will be much cheaper than $150 per couple return.

Not sure if you've been there before but I went there in Sept just last year, great resort and awesome beaches in the area (keep in mind this was my first all inclusive trip).

We stayed up late at night (3-4am) on the beach and saw the baby turtles hatch, they had two people grooming the sands and checking the nesting areas of the beach for hatch-lings. Once hatched they'd pick them up take them far from the tourist area and released them close to the water.

The rental car place inside the resort will charge you about 90-100/day, I went back to the lobby and logged on to their site from my phone, rented the same car online for $20 for the next day. Driving wasn't hard at all, we went into town, shopped, even went to a walmart type store for random supplies and bought some snorkeling gear cheap. Also went to see the Mayan Ruins in Tulum, pretty cheap to get in and you walk around, there's a small but really nice beach there as well.

If you head up to Akumal beach in the early mornings, jump into the water with some snorkeling gear and you can see the adult turtles, they come back to feed at that beach (https://maps.google.ca/maps?saddr=U...Fcw5NwEd_rPL-g&t=h&mra=me&mrsp=0,1&sz=16&z=16).

Oh and the catamaran is a lot of fun, try it out!

I definitely want to check out the ruins, I hear they are really close by. unfortunately I can't really swim but would love to get underwater footage of some aquatic life with my gopro somehow.

I sent them an email demanding they do something hahaha we'll see how it goes over. I rarely get to play the angry customer.

I imagine you already have an answer for this but if not my opinion is to organize a car to take you there from the airport. You could for cheaper using buses & collectivos but its going to be a hassle for sure. If you are prepared for that, cool, if not, a car will be money well spent.

Bus from Airport to Cancun, bus from Cancun to Playa Del Carmen, Collectivo from Playa Del Carmen to Resort is the way I can think of off the top of my head. Although this would be cheaper to do, its going to take a LOT longer in the Mexican heat with your bags and that is not the more fun way to start a vacation.

If this information was not disclosed at time or before prurchase you may have some recourse. If you are forced to pay, I woudl say pay it and go and enjoy your trip no sense to waste it. You will still have a great trip and be better prepared for your next one !!

Have fun & Be safe !!

you could try emailing this company sun excursion formerly Turissimo http://www.sunexcursion.com/
they have a great reputation and also do excursions . you could do bus transfers or private transfers. I believe that hotel is locate in the Riviera Maya right next door to their sister hotel Akumal.
the private transfers are expensive in the Caribbean , that's why buying all inclusive from a tour operator (air +hotel+ transfer) is normally a better bet. Hotels call you VIP but put you through a lot of non sense.
hope you get it solved and have a great time :)

Thanks for the replies. It actually does say in the contract that transportation is not provided.

However I did talk to somebody and he said he paid $170 for all 4, all ways. I brought this up to the guy, and I don't know if it was a miscommunication between him and my gf, but he said it was liek $154 for all four of us, both ways so I agreed to that.

Anyone else on here use RCI or anything like that? I'm just getting into it, scared sh**less it's a giant scam hahaha.
