Hey folks. I got some questions about car GPS units.

1. Do they all have a speedometer?

2. Are they just as accurate as the one in your dash?

Your insights are needed..

PS Thanks all for the kind words on my past posts!! (I missed a few of yous)

1. Im not sure if all have speed but everyone that I have seen has had it.

2. It is more accurate then your speedometer in your dash as alot of dash speedometers are inaccurate straight from the factory.

I've put my Garmin GPS in a few different vehicles from a BMW 745 to a Dodge Minivan and my motorcycle it constantly reports +/- 5KM/hr vs. the factory speedometer. Factory speedometers are supposed to be accurate within a specific percentage per SAE guidelines but they could be accurate on the + or - side.

In the USA there have been some instances where people charged with speeding offenses have successfully defended themselves using GPS information: http://skattertech.com/2011/02/how-my-smart-phone-got-me-out-of-a-speeding-ticket-in-traffic-court/. In other instances the court did not favour the defendant when they attempted to use the GPS as a measuring device: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13578_3-20001248-38.html I suspect that it depends on the judge, how knowledgeable you are, and the overall presentation of said information and technology.

With respect to answering your question this article has some specifics which should help: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10740814

I don't know if all the GPS units feature speedometers, the Garmin units seem to have it as a standard feature. I don't know if Tomtom's have it, I tried to use it once, it was not very user intuitive and never managed to get it working correctly
