GPS power supply mounting options??

Just picked up a Powerlet cigarette kit from Radio World to power my gps. I want to mount it under the passenger seat, but I'm not totally sure how to mount it there. Maybe end up using zip ties. Anyways anyone have pics of where and how they mounted the cigarette socket. Also I'm a little worried about running my gps cord from the rear seat to my triple tree gps mount. I don't want to melt the wire on something hot.

Oh and awesome store!! If you haven't gone there definitely check it out, lots of cool gadgets.

If you are going to permanently mount the "GPS cord" (I assume the cigarette style adapter that came with the GPS) run it under the seat and tank to the front, follow the other wires along the bike and zip tie it them. Whatch for pinch points (mounting tabs from seat/tank etc) you should be fine.

Personally I would have purchased a GPS unit specific power cord that wires directly to the bike instead of the cig adapter. I've had bad luck with long term use & subsequent failure of the cig socket/cig end of GPS wire failing from vibration.

As mentioned, use existing wiring to track it through your bike. As for connecting it; many tap into the licence plate light as it's switched and easy to access. Check your manual first though, you may be surprised to find that there's already a switched accessory connection somewhere convenient... mine has both switched and unswitched behind the headlight.

I only use the switched power (plate light) to trigger a relay. A distribution block under the the seat connected to the batt (via relay) supplies the juice to all accessories. (GPS, heated grips, cig adapter, heated gear).

Here is an excellent write up on setting one up (not just for heated grips but any electrical acessory): http://www.canyonchasers.net/shop/generic/heated-grips-alt.php

I've gone through a few bikes and GPS power options, and my current setup is working quite nicely.
I have a cigarrette lighter in the trunk, my Garmin traffic power cord coiled up in there, with a $2 5' USB
micro extension cord running from there, up under the gas tank, to where the GPS is mounted. This way
when I park, there's no expensive parts left out, it's all under under the hump on my bike.

The Cig lighter is just an extension, http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/brow...e+S+12V+Straight+Extension+Cord.jsp?locale=en
and I cut the male portion off to and soldered ends onto it to work with my fuse block.

This is sort of what the cable I bought on ebay looks like, only longer. What GPS you have will determine what
cable you need.

A good alternative is getting a battery tender installed and getting the gps adaptor for your gps .. no messy wiring ... I have the optimate 3 with an adaptor which u plus and unplug inside the rear seat ... and the battery tender comes in really handy if you kill your battery.

The wiring seems to be covered in this post .. I have a weather proof usb extension ... so it the gps can be unplugged and the permanent part left out in the weather ....

I used a 12v weatherproof usb adapter from princess auto. Was on sale for $2 when i got it.

I'm probably adding one of these soon -- I want to be able to power my nuvi for longer than the battery allows (esp now that it's getting old), plus I can't seem to fill my new GoPro Hero3's 32GB card before both the internal & battery bacpac are dead.

Sidenote, does anyone know where to get a good fuse/power block? I'm starting to have too many items connected to the terminals, but I don't want to spend a ton to fix that. I also don't care about switched power, as everything I have can be 'on' 100% of the time since two items are an alarm and the battery tender pigtail.

My last two bikes I put the cig lighter at the front of the bike so I could easily remove the gps power cord (saved buying a second one to use occasionally on the bike).

My last bike I was able to zip tie it to the ignition with good clearance. The cig lighter came with a rubber top and the rest was sealed so not a problem.

I've seen other guys just have a wire poking through for power. If it has a weatherproof end that's great, if it doesn't then at the least wrap it in some electrical tape when not being used to keep out water and dirt.

And easier way to mount a cit lighter is adhessive-backed velcrow to the bike and cig-lighter. There are tons of options out there, the only concern is that it can stand up to the elements, the wire has clearance with the handle bars turned fully left & right, and that it won't come loose from vibration or a big pot hole.

My current bike the ideal spot was to bolt it to the back of the headlight housing, using some screws with a bit of loctite. For my bike I checked and found that portions of the headlight assembly are hollow (makes sense, square housing, curved reflective headlights spaces).

I ran the wiring from the front of the bike to the back following how the main electrical wire trunk flowed through the bike. Following the trunk is a safer assumption when it comes to clearance and engine heat instead of doing the shortest route through the bike.

The last bike had 10,000km+ of gps power with no issues, the current bike has 9,000km+ with no issues.
