GPS power source issues

I bought a GARMIN Nuvi 4.0. I charged it and it works once turned on.

On my bike, a power source was hooked up to the battery (here are the details of the power source:Motorcycle, ATV, Boat, RV, USB Weatherproof Power Socket - USB ChargerDirect connect to 12 VDC system (Input voltage is DC 12V +/-4)
Powers down to USB power requirements (DC 5V +/-0.25 and 1A max)
Charges: Apple iPhone, Apple iPod, Blackberry, Garmin GPS,Droid, HTC EVO and Vholdr helmet cams
**Jailbroken Apple iPhones may have trouble charging due to operating system charging tolerances.
holes on bracket are 1 3/8 inches apart. Socket is 9/16" x 11/16" x 1 5/8" tall).

When I hook the GPS up to the power source on the bike, the GPS stops showing the route/maps and it goes to a screen where it shows that it is hooked up to a power source. I can't get it to show the route/maps.

We tried my friend's Garmin hooked up to the power source on the bike, and his does not do the same thing- it shows the route.

Would anyone know what I can try/do?

Thanks.

you need a garmin powersource box

Thanks for the quick reply.

By "garmin powesource box",do you mean a USB powersource socket? If not, what do you exactly mean? Is there a site you can refer me to, so I can look it up.

My old Garmin 255W worked fine on the Weatherproof USB power source, but not my new 2595lmt. After many attempts I gave up and installed a cigarette lighter and used the garmin power cord. I preferred the small usb cable, but it just wasn't working out.

Thanks. So, different models have different abilities to connect to power sources and function.
Just curious, was one of your attempts to try a different chord from the Garmin to the USB power source?

Yep, several. The 2595 would sometimes work for a bit, then reboot it self, attempt to connect as a storage device, and so on.
It got to the point where it was constantly rebooting so I gave up.

Try connecting your GPS to your computer and updating the software.

It's a voltage regulation box made by garmin. It drops the voltage from 12v to the correct voltage per pin for the USB charger. Theyr like $25.

I'm almost certain the problem is the old software.

I have two identical GPS, but one of them is the next version of software, but the older one doesn't allow me to charge it with USB and use the maps at the same time. The newer one does.

Cost?
$0.

Thanks everyone!
I'll see what I can do about it before I go off on my trip.

i recently hooked up my garmin gps similarly and it works fine when i use garmin's car charger but the charger stopped working so i hooked it up with a usb car adapter for a different type of gps and it goes into storage mode. i've been trying to find ways to use it while charging too, and i read somewhere that it could be accomplished by turning it on before plugging in, holding the battery icon for 8 seconds so it goes to the test page, then plug it in and exit test page.

i tried this yesterday and it did indeed stay on and allowed me to route while plugged in, but i can't confirm if it was charging or not because it was already fully charged and i was in a hurry so never had a chance to check.

Ah ha...the same thing happens in a car!

Yesterday it was plugged in, worked for a bit and the stopped!
And then, the holder disengaged from the handlebar mount clip and the *&##!!-- GPS fell off onto my tank!! Reacting quickly I caught it, but it was almost a goner! :(

I think I am going to revert back to paper maps - lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :lmao:

lol i fear one day my gps will fly off too and i might find myself sacrificing my bike to save the gps on instinct. i copied a youtube video and used industrial strength velcro to stick mine on. i put something together by the triple tree area but i find that it's really hard to see the routes while i'm riding with the sun's glare. too bad i have a terrible sense of direction so i gotta find a way to fix the angle since not using gps is not an option!

Can you measure the voltage of your USB power adapter
1. Ground to D+
2. Ground to D-
3. Measure the resistance between D- and D+

It's possible your Garmin has 2 modes, (power/charge mode anddata/communicate mode). And the trigger for each mode is the signal at D+ and D-

Shorting the 2 data pins together should trick most of the newer stuff into going into 'rapid charge' mode.

You likely can't hack open the socket, but you can slice open the USB cable (the one from this socket to your device,) and twist them together. Just remember that this will become a special cable, and won't work to carry data anymore.

Thank you so much! It works perfectly, at least for my Nuvi 255. I was ready to get a new GPS, but no need anymore!
