If you want free but illegal, head to pirate bay and search for garmin and download navigator or metroguide (or even topo maps).

If you want free and legal google open street maps for garmin... there is a website that allows you to select an area and a .img file is generated that you can load onto your garmin.

If your device is very old and presumably very limited space, I'd likely go for the OSM method and keep the area selection limited to keep the file small. Garmin City Navigator is big... but includes all of North America. Metroguide Canada is smaller, but is dated now and many newer roads don't exist in it.
