Got rear-ended v2.1

This time on the car.

I told the guy that I wouldn't report it as there was no visible damage on my car, but I still took the insurance info from him just in case.

When I was taking a closer look later on, I found a crack on the bumper. He agreed to replace it, which is $1060 including the labour.

Stop brake checking people... this is the 3rd time you get rear ended in what? A year?

6months.... :(

1st time round, I kinda understand how the other driver was confused as I came to full stop at a stop sign, while the expectation is the roll off. He was born in 1939 though..

2nd time, I was stationary for 5secs. The guy was not looking and he was on his phone, and he said it himself "I was just looking to the side for a second and boom".

This time, I was stationary for 30secs behind 2-3 cars at a redlight.

He sure ****ed up his Caliber or whatever that is

Do you have a bumper stick that says "if you're going to ride my ***, at least pull my hard and smack it hard!"?

We have an Escape with a trailer hitch. My wife got rear-ended by a Toyota Corolla, and our hitch impaled his front end. Way more damage to his car than ours, but still $800 in repairs for our vehicle.

If you got rear ended 3 times in 6 months perhaps its time to take a look at your driving style.

Looking ahead and slowing down ahead of times makes a huge difference, as well as being aware of who's behind you and what they are doing.
I've lost count of how many times i've had to abort a turn because the ****** bag behind me was about to hit me...

Just a thought, don't get all emotional on me now

I know it for sure that I'd write the exact same words, after all, what are the odds to get rear-ended 3times in 6months ? But from my perspective, I'm sitting in traffic, waiting for the lights with bunch of other cars around. The next guy doesn't pay attention and crashes.

Let's assume that I saw him approaching, which I actually did in my mirror. Still, I got cars in front, left and right. Where do I escape ? There is nowhere. I was thinking "when is he going to hit the bra..." - crashed.

About 10 years ago, I was travelling south on the 404 near highway 7, with my golden retriever behind the back seat in a civic hatchback. Traffic stopped and in my rear view mirror I saw a car approaching me too fast. I was in the left lane so I was able to pull my car onto the paved left shoulder and drove ahead to also give the approaching driver an escape route. The car that was coming up on me didn't slow down or pull left, it crashed into the back of the car that was in front of me. My dog would have been killed for sure.

Just a year before that, I was rear ended while driving to work along highway 7 near highway 48, and my Accura Integra was totaled/bent.

Park brake on and tap the brakes repeatedly. Flashing red lights get most peoples attention. Ive had to do his many MANY times since coming here and have heard cars come to screeching halts behind me.

Nice save for the Civic. And the rottie.

Leave more room, and come to a stop like you're carrying explosives with you, nice and gentle :D

While it sounds like it might not be applicable in this situation (sounds like the original poster was just a sitting duck at a traffic light ...), if you have a tailgater or are suspicious about whether the person behind is paying attention (texting, phone, etc), there is another thing you can do.

Obviously this is contingent on you looking well ahead and realizing that things are stopping up there with plenty of distance. Stab the brake HARD but just for a moment - a fraction of a second - then let go. If the person behind is tailgating or is in a stupor on the phone, the sudden appearance of brake lamps and sudden closure of the following distance is quite likely to wake them up out of their stupor. If that happens, their likely reaction is to stomp on the brake (but by now you're off the brake and the distance is no longer closing). Then you can slow down normally and the driver behind is now paying attention and won't have a problem (they'll be ticked off at you ... but if they were not paying attention, it's their fault to begin with). On the other hand, if their stupor continues, they'll close up the distance with minimal real difference in road speed ... even if they continue to not pay attention, they'll tag you gently from behind and you can now slow them down (as opposed to stopping and then getting plowed into afterward). One way or the other, you will then find out in advance whether the driver behind is paying attention, and can act appropriately while you are still moving and before you are the sitting duck.

Those aftermarket brake-lamp-flasher gizmos might be another idea.
