[h=1]Roger Rivard Loses Support From Wisconsin Republicans After Saying 'Some Girls Rape Easy'[/h] The Huffington Post | By Amanda Terkel Posted: 10/12/2012 10:58 am EDT Updated: 10/12/2012 2:36 pm EDT

State Rep. Roger Rivard (R-Rice Lake) is losing support from fellow Republicans after he made controversial comments about rape.

Wisconsin Republicans are quickly disowning state Rep. Roger Rivard (R-Rice Lake), after he told a newspaper that "ome girls rape easy."
Republican Senate candidate and former Gov. Tommy Thompson became the latest to join the chorus on Thursday, putting out a statement saying he was "offended" by what the state lawmaker said.
"As a husband, a father of two daughters and the grandfather of six beautiful granddaughters, I am offended by state Representative Rivard's indefensible remarks," Thompson said. "We must take instances of rape and sexual assault seriously and hold the perpetrators accountable to the utmost degree."
Rivard actually made his controversial remark -- which he said was advice shared with him by his father -- in December, when he talked to The Chetek Alert newspaper about the case of a 17-year-old high school student who was charged with sexual assault after having sex with an underage girl in the band room. The interview came to wider public notice after the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported on it on Wednesday.
Rivard told the Journal-Sentinel that his comments were "taken out of context," saying his father meant to convey that if "you do (have premarital sex), just remember, consensual sex can turn into rape in an awful hurry."
"Because all of a sudden a young lady gets pregnant and the parents are madder than a wet hen and she's not going to say, 'Oh, yeah, I was part of the program.' All that she has to say or the parents have to say is it was rape because she's underage. And he just said, 'Remember, Roger, if you go down that road, some girls,' he said, 'they rape so easy,'" Rivard said.
Rivard is a freshman lawmaker and is stuck in a tight race for reelection against Democrat Stephen Smith.
Thompson had not endorsed Rivard -- but Gov. Scott Walker (R) and vice presidential nominee Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) had. Both men withdrew their endorsements on Thursday, and state Rep. Robin Vos (R-Rochester) -- who is leading the effort to maintain a Republican majority in the Wisconsin Assembly -- also pulled his support.
It's the second time in recent months that Ryan has had to distance himself from a fellow Republican making insensitive comments about rape. In August, after Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.) said women can't get pregnant after a "legitimate rape," both Ryan and Mitt Romney -- as well as much of the GOP establishment -- called on him to withdraw his bid for U.S. Senate. Since that time, Romney and Ryan have maintained their distance, but other members of the party have jumped back in to help Akin defeat Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.).
Rep. Sean Duffy (R-Wis.) said he plans to donate the amount Rivard had given to his 2010 and 2012 congressional campaigns -- $500 -- to the Center Against Sexual and Domestic Abuse in Superior, Wis.
Rivard has said he "very much" regrets sharing his father's advice. He will be participating in a candidates' forum sponsored by a group of women educators on Oct. 16.

Wow. That's the "I'd like to bite off your nipples" smile.

Yet another blowhard Republican that they couldn't keep muzzled.

Yet so many women still vote for this party and their current ideology.

Yeah, that's something I've never been able to wrap my brain around.

I often to wonder about the female politicians and talking heads, and whether they actually believe the politics they espouse, of whether it's just a cynical act to sell books (a la Ann Coulter).

They may make stupid comments but they're a part of the same regime, so on a grand scheme of things, it doesn't matter which face of it the peons vote for.

Yeah, that's something I've never been able to wrap my brain around.

They just explain away this kind of information the same way his aides are trying to spin it; the remark was taken out of context, it was an oversimplified expression of an more nuanced idea, blah blah blah.

The party faithful will say to themselves "he couldn't have meant that, he's one of us!"

We all experience cognitive dissonance like that sometimes, when we pick sides. We can't accept something we deem 'good' can have a bad side, so we either have to change our minds or rationalise the evidence away. In fact this episode may have reinforced their opinions on the party, by mentally filing away the news reports in the 'enemy' category. It's those evil liberal media at work again, dontch'a know!

Also we shouldn't have to explain the phenomenon of "voter inertia" to a person who's been in Canada for a while.. Typically people will vote based on whoever they've been loyal too in the past, red/blue/orange they'll vote for a tree stump if they've voted red/blue/orange in the past.

Taken in the context he meant it, his comments actually make some sense.

+1 big time. I just read it to my wife and she agrees. It sucks, but sometimes the girl is going to say it was rape so that she doesn't get into trouble.

^^ Agreed.....Taken out of context, absolutely it sounds horrible, but if you read fully what he said, before jumping on the political band wagon, it makes sense...

There have been cases of the very thing he speaks of where the girl later on recanted her story and admitted lying to safe her and her familys face.

You mean a left leaning media outlet might report a quote out of context to make a republican look bad!?

No way......

I've noticed a pattern. It's always a white-haired white guy (I think usually republican too) that makes these asinine statements.

Can you please explain to me clearly why his statement was "asinine"? Using the entire statement in context, not just the 4 words. Because I simply don't get it. Maybe I'm just really dumb.....I dunno. Thanks!

EXACTLY, I was reading the first few posts in disbelief as if maybe everyone else is not seeing what I'm reading. Dude is 100% correct and it happens all time time.

Yeah, I was wondering if I read what the article said as incorrect...

I know of girls that have changed their stories after the fact. If you're gonna be a slut, embrace it and own it... I won't mind!

I get the point he was making, but he didn't make it with that comment. Maybe "getting knocked up turns into rape real easy", or even "some girls cry rape real easy". But that's not what he said. Actually the whole point of saying "some girls rape easy" is to be hyperbolic, over the top, extreme. I can get why his dad told him that, to drive the point home (even if it has misanthropic overtones). But he NEVER should have said that in public. It makes it seem as though he has no respect for women, and regardless of whether he does or not, he should have recognised the inflammatory nature of the remark.

He's in friggin politics, communication skills kinda matter!
