Riding with my girlfriend to coffee shop we had not been to, around 8:45. riding along cars in front in both lanes, and 2 cars behind me. Was going with traffic at about 93,94 in a 80. the terrain turns to a hill and as i come down the hill, i begin to slow down the 2 cars in front of me dont. just as i am about to reach the bottom of the hill a cop runs out from no where waving his arms and pointing at me, as the two cars clearly going faster then me, and cars behind me tailgating because i was slowing down speed past him. Apparently i was singled out because the otehr cars had to have been doing 90+. i got clocked going 83, in a 50 zone (had no idea it turned from 80 to 50 but whatever nothing i can do now). He saw i had a spotless driving record and went a bit easy on me giving me a 10 over instead of a 30 over. he told me if i go to court to fight it and lose, i will get charged with 32 over not 10 over. so i should probably just pay it.

This is my first ever ticket, let alone a motorcycle related ticket. so i dont really know what to do next

- my friend says that the cop is just saying that stuff so i dont go to court and i should fight it, but i felt the cop was legit being a nice guy. besides the biker discrimination

- how is this going to affect my insurance, never had anything on my record before

- what will happen if i just pay the ticket

- can i delay paying it for as long as possible so it doesnt show up on my insurance until next year

- should i call a paralegal? will the long term insurance affects make it worth it?

- what is the first thing I should do besides read the ticket fighting website

thanks guys

apparently they can raise it back to the original speed in court. Your insurance will not change until you renew either way, and one ticket most likely wont effect it. If you delay paying it they will eventually suspend your license until you do pay the ticket plus another 150$ license reinstatement fee. Just pay the ticket. Its a minor speeding..just try not to get any more.

Nobody gives a **** about "points". You're not gonna rack them up so don't worry about that. I'd worry about having the ticket on my record, doesn't matter if it's 1km/h over or 49 over, the insurance company sees them the same. Fight the ticket and read through on how people go about doing it. I've heard good things about Redline, so check with them.

This is the result of many motorcyclist being uninsured or riding without a license in Ontario. Cop probably figured his chances of pinning more than a speeding ticket on you was higher than that of the cars around you. His theory did not work out so well, but he went easy on you for being legit.

You admit you were going more than 10 over so it's your call if you want to fight the ticket.

As others have said, if you go to court, the JP can raise back to 32 over. (However, for the insurance rating, as others have said, any ticket from 1 over to 49 over is identical). The only effect this would have is to raise your current fine by ~$150 and give you more demerit points (as stated above, this doesn't matter unless you are a serious ticket collector).

If you just pay the ticket, you are admitting guilt. The first ticket may not increase your insurance rates, but any subsequent tickets will, so fight them all.

If you request a trial, that will delay this process by ~ 1 year. The ticket will not show up on your abstract until their is a conviction (ie. after the trial if you lose).

The first minor ticket normally doesn't affect insurance rates, any subsequent tickets add ~10% each. If you get 2 or more, some insurance companies stop writing you (or drop you from their preffered rate group which costs you 30%+).

Actually you will be surprised.... I am a big fan of cruise control in my car now to help me keep from speeding. I hit 9 points.... way tooo easily....

You hit 9 points once... not so bad (well its bad but well... ya know)
Hit 9 points again... and you best get your good suit in the dry cleaning cus guess who'll be going to court to prove why you should keep your license.

I hit 9 once.... learned my lesson... If I gotta be granny in my car on the road... I'm doing it with pride... noone is gonna take my M away from me.

That's not true. 10km/hr will be considered a minor but something like 49 or even 30 over is considered a major ticket. Some insurance companies will give you one free minor ticket. Something to discuss with your broker.

I would fight it anyways. Hire redline FTW.

Who calls 30 over a major? I have seen majors as low as 45 over, but never less than that. I want to stay away from that insurance company.

I am with jevco, does anyone kno if they give you a free minor ticket?Should I call my broker today and ask? This won't effect my insurance in any way if I told them I got a ticket yesterday? And if this is the case should I just pay my ticket and that's thatIf my insurance considers it 1 minor ticket its still important to fight it? Even tho instead of paying 40 and no points I will b paying 220 and a few points I think if I lose. What are the chances I would win? I was caught pretty red handed, but before the hill there's a right hand turn, I could say someone made a delayed turn and I was scared of the situation and sped around him to get in a saftey zone? Can I call redline and ask for advice? Or are they just going to want me to have them fight my ticket with them because they want to make money off me?Thanks

I wouldn't waste your time or money fighting it, unless you're pretty certain you can beat it. Even with a 32kph over, it's unlikely the crown attorney would let yo plead it down to a no pointer, so the cop did you a favour. JP's are a ******* joke - don't go before one unless you have some solid evidence and good representation.

Call and ask your broker about it. If your record has been clean, they may let it slide one way or another.

What the hell did you do to get 9 points, going over 50km/hr is only 6 points and running from the cops is 7. of course they'll compound all infractions, but seriously... And the points only stay for 2 years after conviction.

Lol to late, my broker is pretty chillin tho, she said its not a big deal, just if I get to more tickets I should be worried, she said if I renew next year they prob won't even pull a record on me. Because she wouldn't be telling the insurance company of my 10 overSo no insurance impact besides I got one gimmie ticket left I guess. Should I still fight this one? Pay 40, take no points and have 1 ticket on my record. Or fight it, potentially lose and have to pay the non reduced fine and money to a paralegal. I'm sick to my stomach over this situation I've never had a ticket before so I don't wanna mess up

It's easy to accumulate 9 points in 2 years - only 3 3 point tickets are required. I got called into the MTO for an interview when I was a teenager over 25 years ago. I was honest with the interviewer, told him I sped intentionally because I thought I could get away with it, know now that I can't get away with it, that it was a stupid thing to do and that my insurer is threatening to drop me and can't afford to risk another ticket - by the look on his face, it certainly wasn't what he expected to hear, so he let me keep my license.

Yeah, I know - cool story bro, lol!

Seriously though, considering what you have to lose by fighting it, I'd just pay the 10kph over and be done with it.

Exactly as promac said. I would get one or two speeding tickets a year. And then a year hit when I had two from the previous year and got my second for the next... The cop who pulled me over came over with my license and the ticket looked at me and said "Your insurance has got to be insane. Get one more and theres a good chance your loosing your license." I took it as my cue to start my second chance. I really watch it now. I like going fast but it is stupid... I know that. And its not worth the risks. Honestly I think its pathetic it got to that point and it took that long for me to learn. But I am happy it was before some thing bad happened.

This happened going threw oaks didn't it? Lol, fight the ****ing ticket, cops always say that ****. When you talk to the JP just explain that you were trying to make a safe distance between you and the tailgater behind you, you dont have to admit to speeding. You were making sure that you and your girl were safe and would not get rear ended.

or hire someone, but that cost money and you need to buy that zzr

I want to fight the ticket but then I don't get 10 over, its 30 over and instead of paying 40 and be done with it, if I lose I'm gonna have to pay 220, and more if I don't do it my self and get a paralegal I'm torn, I don't want a ticket on my record but I don't want to pay out my ***.
