Gopro and other cameras, any protectors on them?

So I just bought a gopro. I was wondering if anyone using a camera on their helmet/bike is using them as is out of the box, or using lens protectors, or covers over them when riding?

I use the supplied case and 3M tape. Haven’t had any issues yet. Mine is mounted to the bike not my helmet.

Sent from my iPhone using GTAMotorcycle.com

I use mine out of the box no lens protection etc. Bug splatter will cover the lens no matter what...;)

They are amazing durable in the clear waterproof case, seen one go helmet first through swamp ice last week
and then the rider (got a little upset) peeled off his helmet with the camera still on it and kicked it down a great steep hill.
Took him a little while to locate the camera in the deep snow, but it still works (y)

A leash to a secondary anchor is not a bad plan. Make sure the camera can't swing into anything moving.

I wouldn't worry about protecting the plastic case. If it gets damaged, just buy another case.

FWIW, Waterloo warbirds run a go pro on their planes at up to ~800 km/h and the only issue they have is that as the speeds climb, it tips back and looks at the sky. Less bugs and grit up there though.

I'm slightly scared of a cam on my helmet now, seems like every time I wear one I crash bad.
ymmv

As others have said, they are quite durable

Big fan of those guys. Awesome group.

I use the contour 3 pro something or other. came with a water wind proof case. Works well. Helmet rolled off a counter dropped it 3 feet right on the camera. No damage. First camera was Contour HD. 3 days walked into the door frame. No damage moved it to the right side of the helmet from now on.

Depending on if the lens is replaceable, would determine the need for a case. Rocks and even enough big bug hits will eventually scratch the lens.

The next step to the question is if you want to use ND filters. That will change the answer to the case question.

Had been a fan of Go Pro for many years. One front of the bike and one rear. A few years ago the plastic arm holding it to the case broke.

Funny thing was I watched the rear camera, saw it bounce, many times. Could not find it. Canadian Tire had a special on the Garmin Virb

Then went to the Osmo action camera. Preferred it to the Go Pro. This year went crazy and ordered the Insta 360 One X2. Should get it next week.

Yes to protector cases. Every time. For the Go Pro, Osmo Action Camera and now for the the Insta 360.

Had a few occasions if I did not the lens would have been broken, cracked.

Spend the extra few dollars. Good insurance.
