I am looking for some family friendly hiking trails. I have no idea where to go? I know the ganny has some but you need to be a member? Can anyone recommend some good trails for me and the kids?

How long were you thinking? I was just at the Seaton Hiking Trail this weekend for a dog walk with some friends.

How is that trail? I pass by it everyday and always see the cars parked there off of 7 but have never gone in.

+1 for the BT.If you need any specific info about parts that interest you, feel free to ask.My wife and i are "end to enders".

well what would be the most family friendly? My youngest is 7.

I live in Bowmanville and off-leash walk two dogs everyday in the Clarington area.

#1 - Orono Crown Lands (655 acrea, 3 parking lots) - Start at Ochonski Rd & Station St, Orono
#2 - Stephens Gulch - Parking lot on Stephens Mill Rd
#3 - Long Sault Conservation - Parking lot on Woodley Rd (just down the road from Mosport)
#4 - Durham East Cross Forest - Parking lot on Devitts Rd

For family friendly, Long Sault is probably best as it's most maintained and has the most recreational use (therefore less dog walkers).

Ajaxguy, I know nothing about trails in the east end, but after years as a scout leader ( insert pedo joke here) , get a small daypack and carry a small first aid kit, a water bottle and some easy to eat snacks. Even if the snacks are for the car ride home its easy to keep 7 yr olds happy if there not hungry/thirsty. And carry a half roll of toilet paper, no idea how but halfway between where you are and a crapper, they will need it. Get your kids outside, let them bring friends and get more kids outside. Meet single moms......

i would actually prefer the off leash stuff as my boxer loves it! He listens to so he wont go running off. I guess I can just punch these in google and see exactly where these are at? Also, most of these with a good pair of boots will be enough right? We have snowshoes but not enough for everyone.

All these places will be great for you and your boys with your dog. My dogs are friendly, and I try to be respectful (as we have to, because dogs are supposed to be leashed) and have only ever had two people (in four years) say anything about the dogs being off-leash.

All of these places can be walked with just normal outer-wear and boots. Most trails/marked trails range from 1.8km - 4km, but you can stretch things out, or have a lot of fun venturing off the trails. Orono Crown Lands are great in spring and fall, because of very few anglers, but trout/salmon run the river and are easy to spot.

For starters, I'd recommend Orono Crown Lands or Long Sault.

Parking lot locations:

Orono Crown Lands
43°58'30.04"N
78°37'39.99"W

43°59'4.61"N
78°38'45.22"W

43°58'7.76"N
78°37'13.05"W

Stephens Gulch
43°57'58.18"N
78°40'42.90"W

Long Sault
44° 2'59.48"N
78°44'31.17"W

Durham East Cross Forest
44° 6'2.86"N
78°43'48.94"W

P.S. Winter walking conditions can be very difficult. Ice and snow accumulation can cause undesriable conditions and might be difficult for a youngster. Your dog may also need to start with shorter walks (less than 3km or 45mins) as his/her paws might not be conditioned. Just some things to keep in-mind.
