NASCAR cars tend to top out around 200 mph. Last Sunday, a guy on a motorcycle [URL="http://www.wired.com/autopia/2011/07/video-ride-along-on-a-311-mph-motorcycle/"]beat that mark by more than 100 mph.
At Loring Air Force Base in Maine, Bill Warner drove — some would say "aimed" — his 1000-horsepower motorcycle and cranked it up to 311 mph in just one-and-a-half miles. Now, the problem is that Warner couldn't replicate the feat on the return attempt, making this an unofficial record, but still ... 300 freaking miles an hour on the motorcycle.
The world record for a streamlined motorcycle, which Warner's is not, is held by Rocky Robinson with an astounding 376 mph. The non-streamlined, sit-on recordholder? None other than Warner himself at 278.6 mph, set last year in Texas.
As Warner said, it's not the speed that terrifies you, it's the slowing down: "At Loring, there is a mile shutdown to slow the vehicles, and I used every bit of it ... The bike was bouncing, hopping, skipping and sliding. Needless to say, I got it stopped safely. It was a little scary."
