go pro hero 3 black, frame rate help

this may be the wrong section, i wasnt sure where to put it. i recorded some videos from tmp yesterday in 720, i figure theres no point in recording in 1080, trying to save some space on my card and my hard drive plus the 720 videos blow up nice and clear on my big screen. i noticed the 720 according to the go pro app only record at 60 and 120 fps. i find when i play back the videos they have a really weird look to them. its hard to explain but anyone whos shot in a higher frame rate and played it back that was knows what im talking about. is there a way to record in 720 at a standard 24 or 30 fps, whichever it is that it uses.

I know what you are referring to in regards of playing back videos filmed at a higher fps then 24-30fps.

That is because the human eye can only see 24-30fps. Which is why TV Shows, and even YouTube videos are compressed down to 24-30fps.

According to this GoPro specification chart you cannot record 720p with 24-30fps on GoPro Hero Black 3:

The best optionI would recommend for you to film at: 1080p 24fps or even higher fps (60fps if you want to do smooth slow motion effect).

The reason for 1080p is because you can crop, zoom, stabilize footage, and etc... down to 720p.

Example:
If you filmed at 720p resolution, and when you get to editing stage you have a unwanted person or object on the sides or corner of the video. You can't crop them out.
If you filmed at 1080p resolution you would be able to do such thing.

But this all depends on how heavy and committed you are when doing video editing. You can simply just record in 1080p at 24fps and just convert the video down to 720p 24fps.

TL;DR:
GoPro Hero 3 Black cannot film in 720p under 60fps.
Best option is to recording 1080p 24fps or higher and convert the video afterwards.

1) Use the GoPro Studio software to convert video down to 720p 24fps.
2) Use Adobe Media Encoder to convert video down to 720p 24fps.
3) Or any other video editing or converting software to convert video down to 720p 24fps.

good to know thanks for the help. i downloaded the go pro editing app a little while back, its a nice little product, lets you zoom in and out, play with video speed, 3d stuff if youre so equipped, quite an impressive little piece of free software. ill just shoot in 1080 and call it a day. i just tend to keep all of my track videos and im a bit too lazy to edit all of them. lol.

Hey, you are welcome :)

You can try using cloud storage to keep some of your videos and free up some HDD, and HDD price are slowly climbing down :)

Good information, except this whole part is wrong. The human eyes can definitely see more than 24fps, and the reason movies started out at 24fps is because film was expensive when it started.

I think 720P@60 and 1080P@30 work out to similar numbers size wise, so you might just want to shoot at 1080P if 30fps is all you are after. Otherwise you'll need to shoot 720P@60 and somehow convert to 30fps without re-encoding the video and loosing quality.

thats what i was trying to figure out in my head as well, if it balanced out some way, you have half the fps but a higher resolution. i guess i could just turn the camera on and change the settings and see how much time i can record in either setting and figure it out from there.
ive got a 2tb external rive i use for movies and only a 500 gb drive on my laptop, i guess i should just start editing them down a little or deleting the movies that dont have much action in them

This. They are almost identical. If you don't want to do slow mo stuff shoot at 1080p30. If you like to do slow mo stuff get a 128gb card and shoot at 1080p60. Screw 720p.

for track use i have no interest in slo mo stuff. unless its me getting pitched off the bike, lol.

That's why it's good to plan ahead and shoot at 60fps ;) Vimeo supports 60fps and youtube should VERY shortly (if they don't already), so it might looks nice (even if a bit freaky) to shoot at 60fps anyway.

im still trying to find some pictures from someone who was at tmp aug 2nd, third session out in red group, starting the second lap i came out of turn 12 and the back tire broke traction and i almost high sided off the bike, *** and feet off the bike. a guy i know who was there said it looked great. i was hoping that someone got some footage from the wall as it was full of people. i managed to get a first person perspective with my go pro form the gas tank view, been actually trying to upload it since saturday and youtubes upload service doesnt want to load for me.

i do wish i had been shooting at 60 fps when i crashed at bogie last year, it would have slowed down a bit better and given me a better view of the guy behind me going off on the grass to avoid running me over.

For some reason helmet mounted cameras, and even bike mounted cameras, BARELY show the scary moments! Like I have a huge slide in turn 1, on video looks like it stepped out maybe 1" lol :(

Who's your ISP? There's lots of good choices out there now with MONSTER upload speeds that are great for getting ish up to youtube. I always reboot my computer, load up firefox with ONLY one tab open to youtube, then upload, and either don't touch the computer or at least use a different browser (chrome, internet explorer, etc.) until the upload is finished.

60mbps download, 10mbps upload, $65/mo: https://xinflix.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=64_63_68

15mbps down, 10mbps up, $37.95/mo: https://xinflix.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=64_63_84

im with teksavvy. my downloads arent bad, upload speed is pathetic. for me to upload a 15 minute 720p video to youtube takes literally 7 hours. its a joke. ive tried to upgrade to a faster service through them but of course they need to send bell and they can only come in a 6 hour window and cant call me ahead of time. bunch of crap.

luckily my step out video actually shows the bike kicking out pretty good so im sure from the outside it was much more impressive

i just rebooted the laptop thinking that maybe something was running that was preventing it from uploading. the upload screen on youtube doesnt even load and jsut gives me the option to use the basic uploader. so i try that and it just hangs on that screen.

looks like it was a chrome issue, downloaded firefox and it seems to be working again
