Getting my M2 Now, but motorcycle next year or 2 years from now advice

I know within the next 1-3 years im getting a motorcycle, im currently 19 and cannot afford the insurance on one now and the cost of the bike, but hopefully next year or 2 years I can get myself a nice 250r.

Since being a licensed driver longer lowers your insurance, I was planning to go write my M1 Test, then take a 2 day program like learning curves (http://www.learningcurves.ca/) to get my m2 license, and just hold onto my M2 till a year to 3 years and once I get my motorcycle I can just go for my M.

Would anyone recommend me doing this? Does your M2 expire? Would I save a large amount on insurance?

M2 expires in 5 years. If you let the M2 expire, then you'll have to do to the whole process again (starting with the M1 written test).

I'm not sure if you'll save on insurance. But, I know that you generally get an insurance discount for how many years of continuos coverage you have.

This might be right, meaning you won't really save much at all by waiting (although I do know when you call, they typically just ask when did you get your license).

To the OP -- out of interest, have you looked into maybe getting a used CBR125R and seeing what the insurance would be? So long as you didn't pay too much for it, you might not take a huge loss if you sold it in 2-3 years (once you get your full M), and then either upgrade to the 250 or something larger.

No I havent looked into anything now because im planning to get a bike next yet if I do, also is their a big insurance drop rate when you have your full M.

What if I get my M2 now, then in 18 months I can get a bike and then go for my M and have cheaper insurance?

I was planning to get my M2 Now because on every insurance quote site, they ask how long have you had ur M1 and M2 for

That helped alot, so according to that if I get my M2 it can help a great deal if I decide to get insured by jevco

Having your m2 for a year (from m1) will make u insurable by jevco, and give u a 40% drop in rates with meloche monnex (if you go to university/belong to other group)
I got a greeeat quote with meloche this year compared to jevco, 1750 vs. 3000 lol. You need the course for meloche though.

Dont forget you can always get quotes now, and tell em your info for next year. Also online quotes are really inaccurate.

Typically going from your M2 to your full M, does not affect your rates.

Things that would affect your rates are, motorcycle safety course and years of continuous coverage.

Waiting WILL lower your rate. At least I know it does with TD.

I'm currently waiting until my M2 is a year old. If I were to insure a 250 now, it would cost $2200/yr. If I wait until my license is a year old, it drops to $1400/yr.
