Getting my M1

Hey guys. I'm new to the forums and just had a question.

I am planning on getting my M1 soon, i've read the book and all and I am currently 17 turning 18 in June. Anyways I was wondering if the ninja 250r would be a good choice for a first bike. I want to get a sports bike just to cruise on for the summers. Would a ninja 250r be the best option for my very first sport bike or does anyone have any other suggestions. Thanks!

P.S. I'm about 5'11 and 200-210 pounds.

From an insurance perspective might be the best. Other options might include the Suzuki GS500 or SV650 which are considered sport touring. Whatever, you decide, just make sure to get your insurance quote first to know what you are getting yourself into.

Second, I highly recommend going through the motorcycle safety course. Humber College and RTI are two of the more popular ones. Completing the course will pay for itself as your insurance company will take the course into consideration and your rates should drop.

Thanks a lot buddy for your reply. So after I get my M1 am I legally entitled to ride a motorcycle under certain conditions such as no Highways (over 80km/h), specific time limits etc. without taking the safety course etc? So just a written M1 test and i'm off to ride a bike?

Also I want a good looking sports bike for my first bike, the ninja 250r does look nice.

you don't need to take the safety course to start riding a bike

http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/driver/gradu/index.shtml#m1

New motorcycle riders with an M1 licence learn to ride under these four conditions:

• your blood alcohol level must be zero;
• you must ride only during daylight hours (1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset);
• you must not ride on highways with speed limits of more than 80 km/h except highways 11, 17, 61, 69, 71, 101, 102, 144, 655;
• you cannot carry passengers.

Thanks buddy. Anyways you got a suggestion for a first sports bike after I pass the written m1 test. I'm about 5'11 and about 200-210 pounds. I want a good looking sports bike that's manageable for the beginner.

Didn't you say that you read the book?? The book clearly tells you under which conditions you can ride the bike with M1. Btw, you should read two books, not one: one is a bike book, 2nd is a general rules/signs book, as you'll have 3 parts on your test, 1 for motorcycle, 2 from G1 test.
Ninja 250R, Honda CBR250, Suzuki GS500F, Ninja500R, etc etc - there are many good beginner sports bikes, just read this forum.

Thanks ViperZ. So one part will be the M1 section, the other 2 parts will be aimed towards road signs, traffic stops etc. Would you say that the test is relatively easy if you have general knowledge of everything ( M1 and G1 ) cause I read both of the books, going for my test this weekend.

I'm also 17 going on 18 in June!!! I recently purchased a 2011 Ninja 250, and man I'm really happy with it!

For your M1, read both the motorcycle handbook and the driver's handbook. The M1 test is basically the entire G1 test (it's even labelled a G1 test) plus two sheets on motorcycles stapled to the front. I'm not sure if it will be the same for you, but any questions on the demerit point system were crossed out :/ Don't take my word for it though. Overall, the test isn't very difficult. Just take your time, read carefully since some questions can be worded funny, and double check your work.

Good luck!!

It's been a while for me, but that's what kmmdw said. I didn't have any questions crossed out. As long as you read the two books and memorized all the important stuff, you should be good. Essentially, you are doing G1+M1 test (3 parts).

hey good luck you guys.

if you guys need a helmet ive got a brand new in box hjc cs-r1 daggar. blue version :)

Welcome. BTW...with the need for quick reflexes - I subscribe to don't drink or take drugs and ride motorcycles at anytime - even after the full M.
