Getting insured with no prior driving history or license

Hi folks.

My coworker (who has very broken english and thick spanish accent, over 30 years old) is looking to get back into bikes but has no Canadian driving experience or licensing history. Basically, he's looking to get his m1 and eventually his M to ride.

I called my broker at State Farm to see if buddy has any options but was told flat out NO for state farm and possibly other insurance companies in Ontario.

Is Vifferfun's decision tree applicable to my coworker's case?

*edit* Buddy wants to ride a 600cc sport bike, if it matters

I would suggest calling an independent broker and going from there. Good luck with the search though i'm curious for the results. It's difficult enough for the people who do the whole process from the age of 16 to current couldn't even imagine trying to start when 30.

Facility will take him, any insurance broker can get him facility rates. To get affordable insurance, he will probably have to take the route recommended to every new rider (get a 125 or 250 to ride for a few years before getting a fast bike).

To my knowledge, aside from Statefarm, motorcycle insurance rates are based on how long you've held your M2 or M. For example, first year for me on a GS500F
3400

Second year
1600

@25 and third year
1100

Keeps going down I would think. Best bet is to get it and wait a year. TDInsurance might be okay after the 1st year.

from what I can see it doesn't really work like that except transition from age 21 and 25. once you are in the age group, it depends more on the insurance company, the rate can be the high next year or it could not lower.

btw gs500f for $3400 is unbelievably expensive! my r6 age 21 only $2600 first year

A colleague of mine in his 40s is going through a similar experience with a car...
basically every insurance comp/broker told him it'll be anywhere b/w 300-400/month.
My cousins also went through stupidly high premiums their first year in
canada. Let us know how it goes as I can then recommend my buddy the same route.

He is starting with no prior insurance history. Your rate is determined by multiplying several factors together. As a very simplified example:

Base Rate: $1000.00
Experience Factor: 2.150
Age Factor: 0.650
Premium = $1397.50

Your friend will have the benefit of a good (i.e. LOW) age factor, but a very bad (i.e. HIGH) experience factor. He will probably find it difficult (or impossible) to find an affordable rate on an SS until he gains some experience first.

Getting your license but not getting a bike will only benefit you with Jevco, and they don't write SS bikes for an affordable rate. Most companies rate based on the number of years you have been insured on a bike, not the number of years you have simply held a bike license.

Thanks Viffer, I'll suggest this to him. But is there any company to your knowledge he can call other than facility?

If he has no experience and insists on riding a SS, I don't think he will qualify for any standard insurance company (and will be forced to go with Facility). Try State Farm and TD, but if neither of those companies will write him then Facility will likely be the only option.

I got my m1 at 30 with no driving experience at all. My first policy was through Riders Plus. I think it was for $1400 (now down to less than $800 through Meloch Monnex). I've only ridden cruisers though.
