Gas station "oil absorbent"/gravel causing fall

About a month ago I was riding to a gas station near my house, as I got there and slowed down to come to a complete stop - I FELL. Luckily, someone nearby came to help me pick up my bike. The owner of the gas station immediately came out and asked if I was okay. After I got back up, I checked my surroundings to see what may have caused me to fall and saw that there was LOTS of gravel on the floor ... which was most likely what caused my tire to slip. (there was some minimal cosmetic damage from the fall)

Today, I went back to the same gas station to fill up and saw that there was once again, lots of gravel. I went inside to talk to the owner regarding the hazard and he explained:
Owner: The gravel acts as an absorbent to cover up oil spills to make it "safe" for everyone to come by.
Me: What about motorcyclists? I came here before, and slipped on the same stuff in a different spot.
Owner: It's by law that we have to cover up the spill.
Me: So you're telling me you're not considering the safety of motorcyclists or smaller vehicles that may come by?
Owner: Well you have to be open your eyes.

What kind of poor ****** excuse is that? /end rant

pay attention, ride slow. Shouldn't happen. or start going to a different gas station.

I'm siding with the owner on this one.

Umm..that's a bit of a lame rant..sorry.

Sorry dude, but it's your fault, get over it. Absorbant gravel is standard for gas stations as well as accidents. If you ever look closely at an intersection, you'll see the stuff all over the place from accident cleanups. I doubt it's any more slippery than fresh oil, or even worse, coolant.

Good topic! Would like to hear about who would ultimately be responsible for damage to a bike.

Or maybe ppl should stop spilling oil at gas stations lol

I know what gas station this is and there is always that stuff on the floor.

And at night, forgot to mention, the lightning is really really bad.

They don't need to leave it on the ground. What ever is going to be absorbed is done so as soon as you toss it down. Unless you where having a gasoline fight zoolanded style....shouldn't be laying about.
Worked at gas station, If boss saw it on the ground he was less than happy.
Falls are on you though should have seen the hazard and avoided it.

Tough crowd, lol.

Well, some people just have to toughen up a bit.. It's like falling off your stairs and blaming someone for putting ground there!! :-D

sorry you fell, but the decision made appears to follwo a law (not sure of ther accuracy) that the establishment owner abides by. It may not be in favour of motorcycles, but we are low on the list of priorities as we have low numbers.

there is more libility in the environmental issues or a slip/fall by any customer walking.

A walking person from a car/bike/whatever is less likely to fall on absorbal then a oil/gas/diesel spill.

best advice, use caution or excercise your right as a consumer and patronize another establishment

Gravel was there for 3 weeks now lol

Change gas station
Choose another pump
etc etc

The oil isnt a good thing to have on the ground at a gas station.
Gravel/sand sucks but lets just say its safer

We could argue that salt on the road during winter is HORRIBLE for sheet metal... i know that in quebec its a mix of salt and sand, even worse...
If we stopped using these measures it would be more dangerous in the long run

Should have been removed...that's flammable gravel.

There's a procedure to follow when dealing with spilled flammable solvents and the use of an absorbent is it. The absorbant needs to be removed eventually though or you're left with a flammable pile of absorbent. The reason you use the stuff is so it's easier to get rid of the liquid gas.

Wow nothing ceases to amaze me now on this forum. OP guess you would prefer to have oil/gas on the ground to slip on vs the absorb all? What were you doing mach 10 coming in to the station and tried to endo the bike? People need to start accepting responsibility for their actions. The gas station is in the right 100%.

Well I couldn't even see the gravel cause it was at night that I was filling up =/

....i wonder how all those damn dirt bike riders ever actually life their bikes off the ground, what will gravel immediatelly making em fall..

...buddy, harden the **** up and stop trying to blame someone else for your inattentiveness
