Many different vendors are selling a couple of different Zumo models for about 20% or more off.

Zumo XT 21% off at Amazon, similar discounts direct from Garmin, GOS central etc.

I have a 396 but I might be tempted to upgrade to the XT as it has topographical maps included and a different type of screen display.

Same price in US. $399.

I like the XT and will give it serious consideration to replace my aging Zumo.

Especially now with the excellent voice control on the Cardo where you can use Seri/ hey Google to control almost everything on your phone it is getting very close to not needing the CarPlay/ AA integration I have been holding out.

Love my XT. The speed of the processor alone is enough reason to have it.

Ok, I think I’ve talked myself into getting this as an upgrade to my 396 LM for the following reasons:

1. Currently I have the 396 for on road and a separate Montana in a cradle for off-road, this single XT unit would replace those two others. I can still sell the 396 and the Montana for decent coin.

2. Bigger screen and true sunlight viewability (the 396 would get washed out).

3. Garmin Drive app vs Garmin Smartphone Link. I’ve had issues with Garmin smartphone link and headset connections etc.

screw it…the only thing is I’ll need to wire in the new power lead as it doesn’t look to be the same as the 396 LM and I hate doing electrical stuff on the bike.

You won't like the XT cable. It's a pia to route.

Is it worse than the 396? I have a power supply just behind my headlight so I can get to that if I borrow a 2 year old’s fingers. I just have miles of cable bundled up that looks like a mess.

How stable is the XT cradle?

Don't know what the 396 cable looks like. It's just odd that they put the black box at the opposite end of the cradle connection. Makes feeding the cable awkward.
I've never heard of anyone losing thier XT because of a failed mount. Seems sturdy enough. I use a touratech locking mount. Without the key, you would need a hammer and a hacksaw.

The wiring is similar to the 396. You've got a (not-so) little power supply brick that you need to hide/secure somewhere underneath the seat or fairing.

I don't trust the stock XT cradle. It's doesn't look or feel as secure as the 396 clamping mechanism. Like WB, I also got the TT locking mount, not just for theft, but so that the GPS doesn't accidentally fall out of the cradle. When you buy the XT, you'll see what I mean. Try it out. You can always add the TT locking mount after if you don't think the stock mount is secure enough.

That TT mount is $250. Eeek. I saw some locking plates by motopump that might do the trick at about $100.

It’s been quite a few years since I wired in my 396 so now I have to remember where I hid that little power brick.

Don't want to deter you from the MotoPump, but all that product does is stop you from pressing the release button on the stock mount. The GPS is still entirely held onto the mount by the stock mechanism, which IMO still looks and feels like it could easily let go of the GPS, especially if you haven't made sure the unit is seated properly. The TT locking mount has two huge claws on either side that hold the GPS in place, even when unlocked.

Just MHO.

Got a separate huge android phone just for moto navigation with 6.7'' OLED screen for $350 instead of 5.5'' Garmin for $540.

Bigger screen, not locked to the Garmin maps and for less money.

The screen is like a mirror in direct sunlight. I got an anti reflection screen protector for it which helps.

Never had any issues with it looking or feeling like it was going to come out of the cradle.
Just have to take it out every time I leave the bike, parked outside.

I can see that now, I just watched a video in Dutch and I don’t speak Dutch. Also all the other versions of locking plates I saw aside from the TT one do the same thing sadly. Hmm. I’ve given TT way too much of my money over the years. What I need is just a simple tether just in case something isn’t snapped in properly, I usually put my GPS in my side bags if I stop for any time.

Maybe…

Edit: this might do the job..

There's a thread on ADVRider where a few people have reported their XT had fallen out of the mount. Most likely due to user error, as you do have to check whether the GPS is seated properly and that the release button has popped back up into place, and not half-way depressed.

Anyway, in the thread, there were some links to tethers that you can glue to the back of the Zumo.

Not a happy GPS week.

I've always liked Garmin, buying new ones as the older ones became out dated. The one I've been running for years lost the traffic feature last summer after a decent service life so I went to Radio World last September and bought the latest version of the same thing. It worked for about five months and it too dropped the traffic feature.

I know my way around southern Ontario well enough to fly by sight but traffic can turn a trip into a nightmare so I want the traffic feature. So back to Radio World.

Their service department can't do anything technical to the unit which is understandable. They did verify that it wasn't working. They basically told me to contact Garmin myself to resolve the situation.

They didn't have a direct replacement in stock but would sell me an upgraded model if I paid the difference. They don't refund, only store credit. Since they don't seem anxious to go to bat for me I don't feel thrilled about giving them any more money.

I called Garmin and the call got dropped after the usual push 1 for... routine but to their credit someone noted my number and quickly called back from Oklahoma. Then the service fizzled. They sent me a do it yourself link.

I'm wondering why I am doing their trouble shooting so a little annoyed with Garmin as well.

I think the auto GPS market is in decline because of the number of cars coming with GP built in. Then I fear what happens when your built in GPS goes south and you have to send your car in for service. Everything built in can be catastrophic.

I can use my cell phone but it's not as convenient.

I set my wiring loop from the the front to the wiring loop. Have set up via the frame and a under the seat. Where I have a wiring box. Used a 3` cable tie. Sent it hooked up and taped with duct tape. Just poked everything up and boom.

The gps in my 2019 Rav 4 is useless. I never use it. The traffic feature on my ZumoXT is absolutely the best.

I stopped using the built in GPS on my Hyundai when I was in unfamiliar territory at night trying to find the right exit on a thruway and someone phoned me, turning the dash into a switchboard instead of map,

It's not the in-car GPS that is going to eat Garmin/TomTom's lunch, it's the online services like Google Maps and Waze.

The car GPS has the same problem as the HW GPS in that the maps get outdated very quickly. The HW GPS vendors have tried to keep up with automatic updates but you still need to address the connectivity (either wi-fi or wired), so it's not as maintenance-free as an online service. For most, the last time the in-car GPS maps gets updated is when it's driven off the lot at the dealer, however many years ago that was.

Right now, both HW GPS and phone has its pros and cons. I was running both on our last trip, and Google Maps was not as accurate out in the bush as my purpose-built maps on my GPS that I loaded myself.

The lack of a pressure-sensitive screen on my phone meant that I had to stop and yank my gloves on and off which got very old. Also, Google Maps doesn't have the ability to add and remove waypoints on the fly, you have to set a new destination... after stopping and taking your gloves off.

For 99.9% of the people on GTAM who travel on asphalt where the map accuracy and cell signal is decent, and they're only riding from A to B, the phone GPS is good enough.
