Garbage & Recycling Bins

Where I live now garbage and recycling is handled by Wellington County, I'm on a rural dirt road and I have seen the state of the blue bins along the road. Sadly not allowed to use blue bags, I also have to pay for garbage bags so as silly as it sounds I don't want them all ripped up or my blue bin blowing away..

Anyone use a large roll type garbage/recycling bin(s) that lasts? I'll need to pick one up as my garbage from the move is piling up quickly.

I have a dumpster that they pick up every second month costs about $180 every pickup save me from having to buy the yellow bags. Also super handy whenever I'm doing renovations or whatever that I have somewhere to jam everything

That is not a bad idea. I can bring garbage to work for anything "Non-Smelly" I'll look into a dumpster in the future but for now I'll just stick with bins..

Our municipality switched to rolling bins that can be picked up by the truck. It's a great idea. Cuts labour and injuries substantially. I suspect most municipalities will head this way as garbage contracts come up. When the switch happens, you get bins for free. Many people grumbled and you were one of the common scenarios. Rolling bins down a long country driveway sucks. In those situations, most seem to leave the bins near the road (inside gate or off road allowance to discourage public use). When heading out, they bring down a bag of garbage and throw it in. On garbage day, roll them 30' to the side of the road. They have held up with no issues so far.

At our old house, I used a wheelie bin from HD or something. It was fine. Not as good as the ones the municipality provided. I would not want to pull it down a long gravel driveway. Wheel base was narrow and wheels were smallish. Good for a short trip on asphalt.

Yeah, that would be my case, sadly nothing to keep them in near the end of the driveway.. another project on the list!

They just leave them beside the driveway. I haven't seen anyone that has built a garbage house for them. Green bin locks. Haven't had an issue with critters. To foil critters, hang them by the handle. Faster, easier and cheaper to build than a shed and holds off anything short of a bear.

We have the large bins that are picked up by truck, they are a pain for me as they dont fit in my garage, used to slip both small blue bins under stairs, we put all metal recycling and green bin out about once per month. All Garbage goes in the burner.

Regular Rubbermaid garbage bin will keep the animals out. Put it and and recycling bins in the back of the truck to put them at driveways end. Pick up recycling bins right after the truck comes as leaving them sitting empty is when they blow all over.
I've never had a problem with this method. Coyotes howling a hundred meters away when I'm putting the bins out is the only issue I've had but they always leave me alone.

Yea, not worried about animals so much, just getting them smashed by angry garbage collectors...
Every blue bin along my road is either cracked and has chunks missing...

That is more likely plows than garbage team. They travel faster in the country and try to throw snow back far. Recycle bins do not appreciate the kick. If you have a mailbox, try to use that to protect your bins.

Good point, I would say a combination of both. I hate the standard "blue bins" so I'm looking for something a little tougher.

Some country houses have built a single braced plywood wall near their mailbox. It protects the box and bins from the plow. They take it away in the summer to improves sight lines. Not sure how municipalities feel about this. As it stays up, I guess they don't feel too strongly here.

They eventually broke all mine. I can stop in at the Halton Waste Station and get as many of the nice new tall ones for free as I need to replace them. I go there for work every few months so I can do it on the company's dime.

The raccoons in my hood must be Mensa members.
I was going to say something similar, in TO the raccoons can get into anything. I have to put large stones on top of my municipal provided garbage and recycling bins. They can be easily opened. In fact I came home one night and watched the raccoon stand there with the lid open. Didn't even flinch, I went inside. Not a problem after using the stones on top.

I take it @Jampy00 the city doesn't make you use their bins?

Since he just moved in, he is probably eligible for a set of municipal containers. Normally that means a green bin and a recycle box or two. Almost never provided with a garbage can (until they go robot arm pickup, then you get a full set of bins). FWIW, my municipality didn't care what it said on the bins. We used some from our old house with no issues. Just get the size right or they get grumpy. On that note, officially, the garbage cans we were allowed to use was very small (similar to the size of a garbage bag). Eyeball survey of the street said you could use something much bigger (obviously keep weight under control as the poor guy was lifting it). Never an issue with the bigger can.

Not sure as @GreyGhost stated I just moved there and have not called, but you bring up a good point about what bins are accepted. I best call before I spend any money.

I think you will find they won't pick up anything else but the county issued one. Someone hit one of mine last week and broke it.

Broken often gets you a free one. Lost and they make you pay for a new one.
Same with up sizing they charge more for larger. Recycling is no charge, or there wasn't one. So I went big and also got 2 of them.
