FYI Toronto Parking Tickets

I guess missing a day of work doesn't lose people enough money anymore...

i think it's more to (as the article said) trim the people who are just hoping to skate with a reduced fine for pleading guilty. You don't pay the extra charge if you're found not guilty, again according to the article.

Doesn't Australia have something like this in effect. If you fight and lose, you have to pay a big fee.

I can kind of understand the idea behind it, but.... it just doesn't seem right.

It's actually very smart in a sense they kill two birds with one stone.

They usually have one officer's cases all lined up in a day, but usually they're discouraged from taking OT so they don't show up. Now if the cop shows up and people are convicted let's say 5-10 people per officer... they're going to make enough to cover the cop's OT and break the "challenge every ticket" mentality. People will just pay their fines from then on.

Call your city councilor and make sure they vote against it.

No more gravy-train, no more taxes, let's have fees!!!

Without going too deep into it I have no problem with it if when you are found not guilty you are paid your lost wages and expenses.

I heard a lawyer on the radio, yesterday, who said that he had worked in that area for 20 years. From what he said the people at City Hall are supposed to offer you resolution, when you go to obtain a court date, but they don't do it. How many people would bother with a court date, if they offered you the reduced fine on the spot?

I am all for this, they should implement this right after they make cops pay us for day off work for every dismissed charge, or the city pays, does not mater. If citizens are penalized when they are wrong they should be at least be compensated for their losses when they are charged and charges do not stick. Or does this work only one way??

anyone got a form letter that we can easily print off, sign and send to our council representative?

What if you never make it to court as is typical for most people?

If they want to charge us 12 bucks to fight a ticket if convicted, they should pay us if we win... gas, loss of income, etc
