So just a lil story about people and the bikes they sell.

So as some people know im looking for a used bike, i just sold th r1 and am unsure what to buy. So i went to look at an 03 R6 from kijiji last night. It was a great price for Ontario and I happened to be the first one to see it so i figured im gonna get a good price.
( its on kijiji for $4000 with extras and 10k)
So I get there and right away notice hasnt been plated since Feb/10. he says he rode it but with no up to date sticker. Looked it all over and can see this bike has been through hell and back. Marker light or the plate hanging out, chips on the top of tank, rusted bolts, fairing screws missing, seat recovered, wax dried all over the bike.
So then i start it and see 29000 on the odod but the ad said 10000. So i ask and he said cuz the sprockets are changed and the guy didnt put a speedohealer in but it has one now( it was there).
But clearly a bike with 10k does not have the kind of wear and tear this thing did. But said no for sure had 10k. So anyways, started it up, engine sounded weird, like it def needeed a tune up, had a lil hiccup in it.

So I try the signals they all work except the front. Hes like " i didnt even know that" how do you know knwo that? He said cuz he doesnt notice them on the front.
So i take off the casing and there are no bulbs! lol. Why? who knows!!
I check the chain and the thing was so streched! like if you pull hard enough could have come off the sprocket.

So ya, asked for the lowest price, he said $3700, I got him down to like $3500 and after humming he agreed but my gut told me no cuz it was beat up and the work i had to do to get it back on the road, wasnt worth it.
I maintain my bikes like crazy and to see people let bikes go like this is so stupid! This goes to show higer or lower mileage it doesnt matter, its all about the maintenance.

So if anyone wants a cheap 03 r6 that they wanna do work too and take the chance, go up and buy it for $3500.

Thanks for listening!

Just the usual, bike had been dropped or fell over, but he insisted it had not. Up in Orillia, cbr600rr, dont remember the year, I saw it out front of a garage, so figured my brother and i would drop in. on the one side: side lever, bar end, signals, and tail section there were scratches and the fairing was cracked. guy still insisted. walked out front where the bike was always parked, huge hole in the asphalt from the kickstand, def fell over. but because he wouldnt even admit to it falling over at the very least, I walked.

Unless the bike was set up to power wheelie in 5th gear, there's no way that you'd see 29,000 on a 10,000 bike. Sounds like it had been extensively used for pavement surfing.

hahaha exactly! but no he insisted it was from the sprocket and i was " dude its 20k off, no waay in hell" Plus like I said the wear and tear like the paint wearing off from the boot is a sign of mopre then 10k, those are lil things people dont understand.

So you gave him an offer of $3500 he said yes then you changed your mind? Why make an offer if you don't want it???

I didnt say yes, I said to him i wouldnt pay more then $3500 and was still checking it over. I knew he was taking it if i decided to take it. Plus after I said that price i noticed more things and told him even at $3500 i dont think i want it anymore.
I could offer anything i want, doesnt mean i have to take it. Until the cash is is hand and offer means nothing!

" Buyer beware " as always

+1... I don't understand why people negotiate if they have no intention to buy, must get an adrenaline rush or something?
I would of walked away as soon as I found out the difference in KM's between the advertised KM's and the actual KM's showing.

Doesnt hurt to negotiate so you know where you stand in case you do decide to buy. You may have walked cuz the kms, but i wasnt to put off by that, i wanted to check out out further and wasnt happy after all. But at least I knew IF i did decide to buy what my price would be.
I think its a smart thing to do!

if i find the person has lied about what they are selling on kijiji and i took time out of my schedule to see something, trolling them is what they deserve...the odo sounds like it was ripped off another bike...or reset...reprogrammed...

Or the seller simply lied, to try and bring in more potential buyers. That sort of thing has me turning around and walking right back out, without wasting any more of my time.

So, how is someone supposed to protect themselves from these types of scenarios, especially when the person is willing to lie through their teeth about the bike they're selling; even more so when most aren't willing to let you test ride?

By doing what I do; walking away the moment that you catch the seller in a single point, that contradicts his ad.

The only way is to go see the bike, have a lil bit of knowledge in regards to the bike your checking out.
I mean for a bike like this one, visually you can see it was raped and as for the odo thats right there and is clearly different from the ad.
odo swaps are very common on bikes im assuming. I saw an R1 on kijiji, its still there posted in May. its an 02 R1, red and white. he says it has 29k on it, i sold it 2 years ago with 38k on it. I knwo its my bike cuz i put that pipe on, i put that undertail on, even the windscreen.
So goes to show its being done and sometimes you wouldnt even know.

In the case of sportbikes, it frequently means a major collision that necessitated the replacement of the gauge cluster. This tends to be shown fairly easily though, if a UVIP is pulled.
