Fuel Starvation at High RPM(I think) 05 gsxr600 track bike

Hi All,

I have been having an issue with my track bike for the past year or so. I thought I had it sorted out but it seemed to still be occurring last weekend at the track. I have what I believe to be a fuel starvation issue at high rpm(above 13k or so) BUT only when the fuel tank is getting low. If I keep it topped up the bike runs fantastic and I can usually get through a full session without issue so I have been just topping up the tank after every session for the time being. Bike is an 05 GSXR600. So I am trying to sort out the issue and I believe it to be one of the following:

1. Gas cap not venting properly(it's an aftermarket Vortex keyless). I have a spare OEM cap which I didn't have the key for so I took it apart and popped the lock cylinder out and then pulled the tumblers out so it will work with a screwdriver and any key. I am going to install it before my next track day.

2. Fuel pump. However seeing as it runs great when full I doubt this is the issue as if it was it would likely run like crap at all times. I do have a couple spare fuel pumps that I could try.

3. ?? Can't think of anything else to add really.

I have checked out the airbox just to make sure the filter was clean and nothing had made a nest or anything in there, all was good and filter was clean. The overflow(vent?) hoses were also checked to make sure they weren't plugged, are these actually in case you overfill the tank or are they vents, the shop manual wasn't really clear on their purpose so thought I would ask to be sure.

I think if you over tighten the vortex caps it blocks the built in vent. Take the cap off and look for the small vent hole and mark it to make sure you don't block the vent.

Fuel pump, just because it primes and runs in low RPM's doesnt mean its not ****ed...Ive had many go bad on me causing the bike to studder at high RPM's but ran fine at low RPM's....Change the pump out and boom its fixed, for me anyways

+1 on the fuel pump.

A couple of guys I traveled with racing in 04-05, both experienced this type of failure and started packing fuel pumps as part of their spares for the 04-05 GSXR600

I do have a couple spares so I will definitely swap it out but just looking for an explanation on why it would run good when the tank is topped up? I would have thought if the fuel pump was going bad it would always run like crap not just when the tank is say below half full(just an estimate as I not sure how empty the tank is when the problem starts). Is it because the pump has to work harder when the fuel gets lower as I would assume there is more vacuum?

fuel pumps use the fuel to cool themselves. a fuel pump on its way out may start to overheat without the fuel around it to cool it. If ya have another pump, throw it and take it from there. Its great to have spares to trouble shoot....nothing worse than having to go and buy parts and start throwing it them at the bike to try and fix a problem.
