Fuel pump assembly O-ring, must replace?

I recently acquired a spare fuel tank, which I decided to paint and use for my track sessions this year. I have to move the fuel pump assembly from my old tank to the new one, manual says I need to replace the O-ring. Usually I do everything by the book, but I wish I would finish this soon and wish I didn't have to wait for parts. How critical is it to replace the O-ring?

Its a conspiracy to sell $2 buck O rings.

You have a 50/50 chance it will be fine and not leak. You can save 2 bucks. Or it can leak and you start all over, or they can find a gas leak on your first race tech check and send you home for the day.

Get a new ring

The O-ring at the dealership is about $25. Are you saying I can just get a regular O-ring from Princess auto?

If in a pinch (no pun intended) could you not use a gasoline resistant sealer to bolster the suspect 0 ring? I'd suggest Hylomar but have had no luck finding it locally.

Inspect the o-ring, if it is in good condition with no nicks or cuts in it and it fits in the groove ok, reuse it.

I have reused many o-rings with no problems.

Ronnie is correct, it can be reused. I've reused O rings, when I've been in the middle of nowhere and couldn't get what i needed.
They printed it in the manual because its the right way to do the job.

Not all O rings are the same, it needs to be resistant to the solvents in fuel. They use about 10 different compound to make O rings.

I buy them by the bag at allorings.com

I'll try to reuse the existing O-ring, if it leaks, I'll get a new one.

Regarding Allorings.com, which ones are suitable for the fuel pump on the gas tank? Here's a few that are gas resistant:

1 = Recommended 2 = Probably Satisfactory 3 = Marginal 4 = Not Recommended
Chemical / Media
Perfluoro-
elastomer
Viton
Extreme
Aflas
TFE/P
Viton
FKM
EPDM
P.C.
Buna-N
NBR
Silicone

Is there some store around here, which sells Buna-N rings? Or ordering online is the only option?

I have never had to replace one of those O-rings after many many pump swaps...They hold up well unless something funny has gone on with it...

As long as it's not visibly swollen and it fits properly (not too big in length) it will be fine. I worked in the industry for years and we reused O rings all the time if they looked good. What kills them is "sour gas" which occurs more in the southwest, or someone cleaning it with acetone or lighter fluid, but it's obvious damage, like the o ring is 50% bigger.

I really like your reply!

I'll do the swap later today, we'll see how it goes.
