FLIR helmet mount.

Yeah, completely insane and possibly irresponsible, but just wondering if anyone has rode with night vision goggles and whether they used sportsman grade hunting goggles, or surplus military. Price difference between them is like 10x.

Why? The only cagers who seem to see motorcyclists with any degree of reliability are the ones who write tickets, so why even bother being visible?

The FLIR helmet would be so you could ride at night without lights.

Anyway, seems like tons of fun until you are caught, or die.

LOL you do that, the incoming headlights will make you blind.

I played in an night airsoft game in a mental hospital field, and ppl with nv were screeming like little girls about flash light control....LOL it was literally making them blind.

But yea, I agree with you its stupid, but intersting to try on a empty road with no other cars or lights<---but again, wats the point of that!

Any NV equipment worth a damn automatically cuts out bright lights. Your (lol) airsoft buddies were probably using some Wal-Mart junk.

The problem is field of view, nothing else. Wanna ride with only 40 degrees of peripheral vision? Have fun with that....

Is that 40deg field of view common to all products because of the lens aperture of the monocole, or just some of the junky scopes? I knew about the automatic adjustment for lights on anything of quality, and the other thermal imaging tech out there seems to be pretty advanced.

That said, the most reasonable way to compensate for the narrow field of view would be to increase your relative speed to anything else on the road. The idea being that anything outside your narrow FOV for more than 1/10th of a second would necessarily be behind you.

Night vision or thermal imaging?

You keep jumping back and forth between the two...

IR (thermal) detects heat signatures. NV amplifies light.

Even GEN5 stuff that cost upwards of $3000 (low end lowest bidder stuff) to $10 000 still has a narrow field of view at 1:1 ratio and gives no depth perception.

At walking speed you tend to do OK but driving is hard at 30KM/PH and most of the time it's better to Black out drive after letting your vision adjust to darkness.

It's actually quite rare that it's pitch black out unless there is no moon or there is full cloud cover.

So, trying to drive/ride like that on public roads would end up getting you dead I'm sure since you would lose your night vision the first time you come across oncoming lights and you couldn't judge speed or distance at 60-100 KPH with optics.

100%

Your airsoft buddies yelling about light control were just being idiots, they automatically turn off at a certain light threshold...

I HATE even just walking with the crap on... I typically just let my eyes adjust to the light naturally and go that way. Way easier for depth perception (jumping ditches, climbing up rocks etc.) Field of view SUCKS and is another reason I hated it. The extra weight isn't straight down on your head either, but it's held out in front of your head, twisting your head down... After a bit it's pretty uncomfortable.
The only really cool thing about it, is using the IR laser on the barrel of our rifles to aim/point stuff out, knowing nobody else could see it.

True FLIR equipment is awesome, when you're watching someone closely that has no idea you can see what they are doing.

As for riding with it, no way would it be safe if you tried!

If the enemy had NV also, would they see your IR laser?

Didn't myth busters do a test like this? I think they used night vision goggles and a go-kart, turned off all the lights at the track and went for it.

If I remember correctly, they complained about depth perception. I think they made out alright though.

Check out YouTube or do a quick Google search for the clip, I'm sure you can find it.
