Flat rate - how do I survive?

Hello all.

I have a question for all you dealership auto techs.

I will be working as a tech at a dealership next week. They pay flat rate. I only have experience working straight time.
If you worked at a dealership, or currently working in one, can you share you experiences?

Thank you all in advance.

A friend went through a job from hell on flat rate because the shop foreman was a con artist. Dealership now closed. If you didn't buy the guy lunch or a bottle once in a while you got the crappy little jobs that only paid 1/2 hour but took an hour to do right.

My friend was honest and did things right. An idle adjustment could take ages in winter if you had to find keys, move cars, clean windshields, warm up engine, hook up etc.

Other jobs you could make double time. Not sure if that helps.

You can make very very good money working flat rate, 6 figures good.
They 2 main keys are how busy is your dealer and how fast and good are you?
Some jobs pay 8 hours and take 15min other jobs pay 4 hours and take 8. As you progress you will find short cuts to do certain jobs that make you money.
Foremans don't hand out work at dealers, work is handed out by a tower operator or computer (era system).
Try to get into a busy dealer with little competition around, talk to some of the techs working there and get some insight as to what it's like.
What dealer and were you looking to get into?
