First riding season, first oh s**t moment...

So this is my first riding season, and I had my first oh **** moment on my way back from work and feel compelled to share with everyone. So far have about 4,000 km under me. Ride a ninja 250.

Before anything, what occured is my fault no one elses.

I was riding home from work in the left lane, and there was a GO bus to my right, and a car infront of me. I couldn't pass because the bus was right there and the car wouldn't give me room. I was pretty much tail gating the car infront of me. (I know, stupid me). Traffic lights were approaching, and the green turned to yellow, the car infront of my tapped the brakes, and then accelerated like it was going to "beat the yellow". I was so close I decided I would go through as well. (Stupid me again). Then the car decided to slam on the brakes and stopped at the lights. I hesitated and put both the front and back brakes on hard, rear wheel locked up and my bike started fish tailing. I basically did a power slide and I ended up with my bike horizontal in my lane behind the car about 3 feet away. I have no idea how I pulled that off. If I looked right I saw the back of the car, and looked left I saw the front of the other car with 2 guys sitting in it with their mouths wide open.

Somehow I managed to avoid wiping out. If I was not tail gating I would have ample room to stop safely even if the guy in front slammed on the brakes. Lesson learned.

Just wanted to share.

Glad to see you made out alright in the end.

I'm a new rider this season - no oh **** moment yet - cross fingers. But my stead fast rule this season, is 'dont try to beat the Amber light'. A couple reasons;
-like you - risk of anyone in front of me slamming their brakes and me going over their hood. There was an accident last year, this same scenario unfolded - guy slammed into back of car (East/West), flew over hood of car into the intersection, and was run over/dragged to his death from a car coming from the North/South street
-run the risk of a car making the left turn
-and depending on how committed you are or not committed, if there is a car behind you thinking they'll race through with you, if you decide to stop last minute (as we can stop pretty quick on a bike) the car will slam into the back of you.

Ride safe the rest of the year - take it easy at intersections. The extra 5 seconds you gain are not worth dying over.

Altho probably ****less, glad to hear your OK !

So the question is, what is your resolution to this situation ?

too much rear brake and following too closely. luckily you weren't injured and you never made contact with another vehicle.

Glad to know you walk out alright, no scratch, injury or damage to bike. Lucky you. I learn the hard way. It does alot of damage to my wallet :S
