I'm planning on buying a ton of fireworks tonight for Canada Day. I've never bought any before. Suggestions are appreciated!
 
roman candles.
 
i suggest you only buy half a ton, you will get bored quick....
anywho try to find ones that are illegal they are more fun
 
Get 500lbs of Ammonium Nitrate
200lbs of Diesel Fuel

Buy a half dozen of the finale ones over a whole wack of the cheap ones.
 
The 'cakes' are $30 and up, but ya, better than 5 $10 roman candles. Still, if you have kids you still need plenty of the small stuff.
 
Where do you guys buy them from? If you know places that sell illegal fireworks those crazy chinese ones PM me a location/contact.

The fireworks you can buy at these random fly-by-night stores are a lot better than they were than 20 years ago. I'd recommend getting a kit, and a bunch of one-offs. Blow the kit ones off first. These are usually the less potent ones, but you'll get about 15-20 minutes out of them. Then add some of the one-offs. The one offs are pretty good these days. You can get ones that shoot off 100-200 in a short period. Some will whistle, some will burst, etc. Be forewarned though - these one-offs are not cheap (which is partly why I'm recommending the kit, as it'll average the cost out).

Also make sure you have a good place to pit the fireworks. I usually use soil in a bucket.
 
I would forego the kit and just get the one-offs, some of the kits contain really loud fireworks that just go bang and get the neighbours upset. I haven't gotten a good firework in a kit yet.
I buy a half dozen, my brother and a couple of friends do the same and we end up with an hour or more of fireworks. Just get sparklers and a burning school house for the kids.

If you can get a few people together to split the costs, I agree and go with just one-offs. But if it's all your tab, I'd still consider the kit.
 
If you're going to shoot off the big ones, make sure you have lots of open space around. I've had people complain when their houses were 50 metres away from where we were shooting the fireworks.
We ended up going to the soccer pitch at the school yard. There we had a police car stop to watch the display.
 
One year I dropped a couple of C notes on the best kit and it was pretty nice. Took a while to light it all though. The perma-smile on my 6 y.o. boy's face was worth it. However, there was the dilemma of where to light them. I live in a condo, so had to hunt out a suitable spot. Any thoughts on that one?

Like Baggsy mentioned, open fields (soccer or baseball pitches) are usually good bets. Admittedly, I'm not sure about the legalities.
 
I just bought a crapload of one offs. Some sparklers and roman candles, but mostly ones that shoot up in the air. I'll post up a pic of my haul when I get home, and I'll try and make a video of the show.
 
I have one of those rubbermaid storage boxes full of play sand, a large water jug, a bucket full of sand, lighter, punk, flashlights, garbage bags, rakes for clean up and blankets/chairs for sitting that I take with me.
We go to the middle of a large open field at the local school.
That way the police will sit and watch without getting involved.
