Family day, a day to remember. I'm no longer the man!

Well this will be a family day for me to remember. It's official, I've been beat and there will be no way for me to take it back. It was fair and square, I gave it all I could but I have been finally beaten.

The story:

I've been spending a few hours over the past few days with my sons and in particular my older son. We've been playing the typical video games and he's finally gotten into racing games. Turns out he likes the Forza 4 racing series, not the Horizon stuff. Last night we had a night of Hummer (Humvee) racing followed by taking a pair of fiat 500's for a round. Most previous races I've had to get past him and then coast so he can catch-up, his fun was crashing into the back of my choosen car and having me spin out at which point I'd chase him down. Not a particular fair race.

We raced previous to my loosing one, he chooses to up the ante and picks a modern Dodge Viper ACR (or tuner version, exact model slips my mind), street legal, painted baby blue with black stripe. I scoff, "ha!". Let me show him real American steel, I pick a modern Ford GT, dark blue with white stripe, stock but should give the viper a run.

We line up, some swiss looking winter race track, sweeping curves with a few straights, has enough to keep us challenged but still top out these cars. Counter starts, knowing full well I've got the better car I give him the hole shot, counts to 0 and then go! He spins the viper off the line, I see it inch in front and then hammer my GT, spin in a bit of smoke. Off throttle and back in on the GT. Bam! the viper gets traction, "what the f'", it yanks away from the Ford, "no way?!". His car can't be that much faster, "damn, I should of looked at the specs more closely." I think to myself. His Viper pulls and I can't catch him. Screw this, no more pussy footing, I give it all I can, cutting each corner, full throttling the straights. Alas, at the end of that run he's got me by car lengths, almost ran out of the 30 second timer from his crossing the finish to my own.

Okay that wasn't a fair race, I gave him the launch and didn't take it serious. Screw this I'm not going to loose, my man hoods still intact. "Rematch" I yell.

This time I opt for a fairer game, "Ha, ha. Let me stack the odds a little because this punk isn't going to have the pleasure." "Son, let me just change my color, I don't like the paint job of my Ford GT." I go to the selection menu and quickly tab to the end line, opting for a silver pilot Ford GT race only version. I don't think he notices but deep down I know he does. "Okay, ready!"

He keeps his modern Dodge Viper ACR (or some crappy tuner version), it's a street version with no racing stickers. The timer starts 3, 2..., "blam, blam, blam, I bounce my rev limiter of the redline.", ...1... I get off the throttle and start pulsing it to get better traction, 0 .. green, my Ford GT hole shots, "Yeah, that'll show him. I've got 1-2 car lengths on him now." ... "Wait, wtf?" His Viper gets traction, and boom he's on my side! That's impossible I've got the better car, I'm the better driver, his is only the street version." Looking too much at the wrong split screen I miss the first hard curve, sliding along and rubbing my passenger side on the wall, I drop back and his viper's got 4-5 car lengths now. "It's on!"

I set tunnel vision to full and phaser to kill. The Ford GT starts moving, closing the gaps, I hit almost perfect apexes. Full throttle when I can coast when needed in the shallow curves. "Ha, here comes a tight curve." Bam, his Viper goes hot, hauling it's azz and RWD behind like a drift king, it makes contact on the corner. "Bang!" it leaps forward putting a couple car lengths on me. Turns out that rubbing you azz on the guard rail turns the tuner Viper into a scolded ape. But I'm not giving in, closer and closer I start closing the gap, can't count on the Ford GT taking the corners but at least I've got the faster car. Lap after lap, I inch closer, practically drafting him in the last straight. There it is, the end line, we're both WOT. THe Ford GT on the rear bumper of the Viper ACR (or whatever undead beast made it). I can feel the pressure, 300m, I'm at his rear panel, 200m, I've got his side door, 100m, I can see his front quarter, 0m ....

My seven (7) year old has finally beaten in an all out race course. His blue / black Viper street tuner version beat me by a bumper in an all out, no holds track race against my modern Ford GT race car.

I am no longer the man. This family day I'm officially the old man.
...
"Come here sunny, let me teach you how to drive the way real men do. No traction, stability and abs! That's the way the real racers do, just before they walk to school, 9 miles in the blizzard, up hill both ways."

Happy Family day to you all :(

haha Great post! Very well told. Now tell me, did this even happen to ruin your whole day?! Did you sulk, and mope around the house? I only ask because i may know someone who lost to their 4 year old, and my... i mean his reaction was similar.
But you see, here is my excuse, as i had alot of time to dwell and think of one. We come from the days where the only games we played were outside. Kids these days can work at nasa by the time they are 10.
Now whatever you do, don't allot your seven year old to wake up in the middle of the room, go strolling into the living room and find you with 3 empty redbulls, and a pack of twinkies practicing every track on that game...... especially don't get caught using his viper because you have given up on your ford!

Happy Family Day!

Well written. It's only a matter of time when he'll be beating at everything. Don't deny the inevitable

Great post old man.

Sorry to hear that you are becoming decrepit. :p

Did you turn in your Man Card? Does the Old Man Card come pre wrinkled?

Thanks all (I think) for the moral support. When he beats me at MOTO GP it'll be a truly sad day.
