On Friday, September 29 at approx. 11:45 pm, I parked my 2011 Kawi ninja250 in a green P designated metered space on the northeast corner of Queen and Spadina; right in front of the CIBC. I was very mindful of the amount of space I left around me for other vehicles to park safely nearby. I basically parked 4-5 metres behind a small suv, ample amount of room for the suv to reverse and get out of his/her parking spot if needed. To my left was a fire hydrant that was approx. 2-3 metres away, I was a little hesitant at first to be that close to the hydrant as to risk getting a hefty ticket but I felt confident in the space left on both sides of my bike. I returned to my motorcycle at approx. 1:00am, as I was walking towards my bike I noticed a slip of paper hanging out of my gas-tank flip-cover. I suddenly noticed extensive damage to all fenders on the left side of my bike. I also noticed that the handlebars, which were left locked, was damaged as well. The left side of the handlebars were bent out of shape due to falling on its side. I unlocked the handlebars to assess it and the steering alignment was well off, also the range of motion for turning the bars to the left well exceeded what it should be as the left-hand bar grips now touch the gas tank. I went on to read the slip of paper left behind, it was written by a good Samaritan who stated, "Hey just wanted to let you know that some f***in' ***hole knocked over your motorcycle I lifted it up but before you start it you might want to bring it to a shop, my name is ***** I have a bike too, I f***in' hate seeing that sh**-... " the person also left their mobile number in the note if I had any questions for him. I did contact this person and spoke briefly but they did not witness the incident happen. My bike also had some cracks on the right fairing that I can conclude was the point of impact. It was hit hard enough that the bike actually tipped over its own kickstand.
Anyways, long story short, I had to tow it to a collision reporting centre since the at-fault driver failed to remain at the scene. The bike is now at Kahuna Powersports and I'm waiting for an insurance adjuster to contact me on Monday. I've taken the situation pretty well, obviously I'm bummed because I rely on my bike to commute to work and school; but there's only so much I can do. I'm annoyed because I was supposed to install frame sliders earlier this season and now a number of things have or will most likely happen/be affected:
1. I was scheduled to take my full M licensing test on October 15, it might be possible to still take the test if my bike is mechanically ready, the cosmetic damage will take longer to repair.
2. The damage estimate is at LEAST $2000 and most likely more after a thorough assessment, the Insurance adjuster might decide that its not worth repairing the bike in comparison to its value and just write the vehicle off.
3. I'm only 23, I have a clean record driving and riding; but now that I have made a claim even though I'm not at fault, I'm worried my premiums will rise; if I even have a bike to renew a policy for that is.
It was a really busy intersection especially since it was Friday night. Somebody saw something for sure. My bike was in the vicinity of several surveillance cameras of CIBC, perhaps I can speak to them about obtaining any sort of footage.
Please feel free to share any thoughts, opinions or comments.
