I clicked onto a link a friend posted on FB and later ended up with a couple of notes from cousins commenting on the link. The link was stupid and not a NSFW site. Still, I don't need the big brother experience.
This morning I was researching motels for an upcoming trip and a banner comes up saying four of my friends have used the site. At first I thought it was a reaping scam but then their pictures came up.
So far I don't think my reputation has been harmed but what if they find out I go onto the GTAM site?
If I opt out of FB will I start seeing black SUVs following me?

You already know too much. Logout of everything and stay away from anything.
 
I purposely avoid FB and LinkedIn as much as possible for just those reasons. I had to laugh when I read about Sergey Brin crying about the loss of the "open and free" internet as Google and FB etc collect data on us without our permission or knowledge..
 
at first I was looking for work and wanted to market myself, so I joined LinkedIn. Now I'm starting to regret it. I think I will delete account soon since I found a job already. I put up alot of my past work history too.
 
I knew a mining engineer who took a job in a small B.C. town. One morning at work a co-worker came up to him and asked him if the previous day had been a special occasion.

"Why?" he asked.

Another co-worker saw him and his wife down at the local steak house. "So what was it? Wife's birthday, anniversary?"

Facebook, everyone's small town.

So, what did you have for lunch?
 
It surprises me how willingly and without a real conscious thought about it, people give up their right to privacy by subscribing to all of these sites in the interest of "staying connected" with friends. Your real friends will stay connected with you whether you're on facebook or not. Although most of you guys probably have an account just to creep on the cute girls pages... hahaha! (kidding)

I use the one called Disconnect, includes a cute little icon so you can see how much it blocks.

Link is for the Chrome version, though I hear there are others.
 
People are far too paranoid.

They collect your personal data so they can put up appropriate ads in your web browser. They also sell this data to marketing firms: not always for malicious purposes, but so that marketing firms can get a grip on what people are interested in.

Trust me, no government or secret society of world powers cares where any of us are right now. Generally speaking though; it's good to limit the amount of information you post on public domains (yes, even on *gasp* GTAM)
