Extending riding season...

Hi! All!

Just got my M2 and been riding for a month now and I don't want to stop because of the cold. I've been fortunate enough to get a bike with handle bar warmers but the cold weather gear / jackets are so expensive. Layering up has been ok but I don't like looking bulky or having my movements too restricted. So I am reaching out to the forum for some alternatives anyone has been using.

So far I've been using my underarmor cold weather stuff under my riding gear but find that its not enough. Looking into some heated clothing - like on this site and it looks promising! http://thermalcoreclothing.com anyone know of any other people selling gear we could use for cold weather riding?

Gerbings makes electricly heated gear. It's not cheap but you get what you pay for. I can do highway in december and be toasty. Not warm... Toasty. It's not bulky because it's a jacket liner so it's really quite thin. I tried heated grips and those were ok to a certain point but they won't help the outside of your hands. The gerbings gloves plug into the jacket sleeve so it's a little bit of work but not bad. completely worth it for the comfort level. Gerbings also has a lifetime warranty where others only have 3 years. I really have nothing bad to say about them. Buying online will save a bit. I'm sure you could later up or find just the right jacket but frankly I like my jacket so this way I can wear a tshirt under the liner in my jacket during winter. Which just seems boss.

Great heads up on Gerbings, fyrebug. I'm thinking about looking into some heated gear too.

I just checked out Gerbing's site and found this:

When you purchase a Gerbing's heated garment within the United States, the electrical components of the garment are warranted to be free from factory defects in materials and workmanship for the lifetime of the garment.

Meaning if the product is purchased outside of the US, the Lifetime Warranty doesn't apply??

when the temps drop you need to be really careful. Cold tires are like glass, and they will not maintain heat. Lines on the road become very slippery especially in the morning with dew. Very very smooth easy inputs in the morning/evenings.

It depends on how diehard you want to be. As discussed, active heat includes heated gear as well as heated grips. Your bike already has heated grips, a great feature. Heated gear will require some electrical upgrades such as relays and electrical outlets for your bike. Passive heat strategies include a larger windshield with lowers. The less you are in the wind the less the wind will rob your precious heat. You will need to protect your hands and feet as best you can. Cold feet are an issue with many riders.

Many people use ski gear. It is not as protective but can be very warm, windproof and cheaper than MC gear. Get some knee protection, which will also keep your knees warmer. I have even tried hockey knee shin pads and they are surprisingly warm and cut the wind, but are very bulky.

Note the dew point on the weather forecast. This is the temperature when the air can no longer hold water vapour and will drop to the ground to make dew. If the dew point is below freezing and the pavement cannot heat up the water, you will get black ice on the road.

Head to Winners for columbia or new balance long sleeve shirts.
($25/$30)
Good shirts with good intelligent R+D.( very thin)

Insulated jacket and these shirts, good for +5 c. Riding, and come with thumb holes to boot!
