Expectations for Insurance

Hey Guys,

I am thinking of getting my M2 in ontario this spring and want to know what to expect for insurance. Here is my History:
Age: 23

Canada:
Full G licence, have had my licence for 7 years
No tickets, no accidents, no anything basically

USA (california):
Full motorcycle license from 2011 to 2014 (currently expired)
Insured with StateFarm with no tickets, no accidents
Bikes owned: 2008 Ninja 250r, 2005 CBR600rr
I have a letter from state farm showing I have had the policies for these bikes and no claims during the time.

Considering the following: 2014 - 2016 Ninja 650r, KTM RC390, CBR500R

Go with Aviva, the personal, desjardins. You might be paying close to 1800-2300 for comprehensive for those bikes.

I was in a similar situation when I started riding back in July. I'm 23, Full G, M2, no tickets or accidents and own a '15 ER6n (naked Ninja 650r).

I am paying $200/month for liability/theft/fire on it. I was quoted around $160/month for anything in the 300cc range, so it made more sense IMO to just get a bigger bike for the extra $40. This is all with Aviva by the way, you won't get anything cheaper anywhere else at your age. You won't be able to ride anything bigger than 650cc without getting a $5500 price increase and don't bother looking at any SS bikes. Insurance also doesn't get cheaper on used bikes.

Once you have your licence for 4 years you will have a few better options. I would recommend calling Paul South for some quotes, he really is the best option for finding coverage in Ontario. Desjardins was pretty close at $300/ month but that was only if I bundled my car with it too.

Good luck, it is a shitshow.

From the feedback I've been getting so far, insurance in ontario seems absolutely ridiculous. I only paid 300/month when I wasn in SF and that was for both a 250r and the cbr600rr.

Lol can't compare Ontario insurance premiums to American premiums. My friend in Glendale whines about paying $1100/YEAR on a 2013 S1000RR. This dude's 21 with 2 speeding tickets.

Im almost the same, 27 with G since i was 16, no accidents/tickets. getting M2 on april 3rd, insuring a CBR300RA SE with MSF course certificate. I dont have the USA experience though, and TBH I don't think it will matter

My best quote was something like $1196/yr with Dalton Timmis, that might give you an idea

I was quoted cheapest with DT as well.
2001 Saab 95 liability only
899 Panigale full coverage.
I am 25, full G, driving for 9 years. new M2 rider.
2 minor tickets
$5000 a year.

That's not a bad price considering some numbers others are getting, including me. Do you mind if I get the contact phone#/email for your agent?
I'm similar to you 32, G since 22ish, no accidents/tix/claims, CBR600f4i, M2 Jan 2016 with MSF.

Thanks for all the feedback. The reason I included my US experience was that in the US when i was being insured I had provided a certificate from my ontario insurance provider showing i have no claims which actually reduced my premiums.

I am only going for my M1 tomorrow and my M2 in april. Looks like I am looking at a 1200 - 2000/year range.

Under 25 I was paying $430/month on State Farm living in the boonies outside of Guelph. That was on an M2 with under a year of experience, though. But also prices have gone up (as that was 7 years ago).
Dropped to $140/month after I turned 25.

Sorry to give you the bad news, once you let your DL expiry, you need to start from the beginning as a new driver/rider again, USA experience will no longer be valid.
