Have a 2003 honda ace and just wanted to know if its okay to mod the factory exhaust by punching holes in the baffles and drilling two holes at 3 and 9. Is there any concerns:cool:

Your heat score will go up, you may get tickets in some areas (around bel fountain for one) and your bike will make the same or less power (unless you rejet).

On the other hand it will be louder.

I've never heard of anyone getting a ticket in Caledon (yet) for loud exhausts. That being said, loud exhausts are annoying and the hammer is coming down for motorcycle noise and eventually emission testing.

It would be best to buy and replace those oem exhaust to a aftermarket muffler. Yes punching some holes with the exhaust will make it more nosier but the engine will suffer and also fuel consumptions.

You havent?

Hwy 10 is nothing but a playground for the OPP and MTO for this type of thing.

This. I live near forks. They're always looking for that kind of thing. It was a huge issue here a couple of years ago and they now have a bylaw and testing because of all the people who had to scream around the area wound up to show off.

Good. Hopefully they can make this province-wide. Noise pollution is still pollution.

Yeah if you live near the "forks" you know first hand what goes on than.

They arent just targeting motorcycles either, cars/trucks etc for proper emissions equipement and such.

So this is for real? I was at Belfountain today, lots of thunder. My bike isn't so quiet either.

Very for real. I forget what key words but if you google for something like Caledon or Belfountain noise bylaw you'll see the law and the details of how the road side testing is done and what db you must meet to pass. Like I said, enough clowns with Honda civics and Harley's with drag pipes effed it up for everyone else.

Replying to my own thread from last week I've changed my mind on the mod I love the bike just the way it is may add a few accessories but that's it. Rides nice sounds nice for my liking and it would be a shame to damage a perfectly good bike I'm very lucky to have been able to get ACE in such great shape. Thanks for all the replies

Too many people do mods to their exhaust thinking well it breathes better now so I must be getting some power gains. The truth is most of the time you have lost power.

If you mod the pipes you need to mod the other end. Higher flowing air cleaner (if more air comes out the back you need more air going in) ahh but now I have more air going in and that means my fuel mixture is now too lean.

So now you have to re-jet your carbs to correct the lean fuel mixture or if fuel injected you now need to re-map your fuel system. And sometimes the gain in power (and sound) is minimal and not worth all the $ put in.

And then this is all dependent on what exhaust, what air cleaner etc. you used. It can be a very difficult process for the home mechanic. The only true way is to do test runs/plug chops or better yet have it dyno tuned.

Short answer is, researching and matching the correct components together can produce satisfying results but too many people just bolt things on because the manufacturer claims a boost of so much horsepower. What they don't say is that gain came after doing all the other mods and professionally tuning it to get that result. If you are happy with the bike leave it alone ans save some $$$
