Engine Shuts off - Urgent

I picked up the bike last week but couldnt get insurance on it till today (jevco 1 yr policy). Anyways, while riding to work the engine just shut off. Happened about 3 - 4 times on my way to work, i thought it was gas so I switched it to my reserve tank and filled it up. Doesn't seem to be the problem though. Any help would be great !

My bike is the 2008 ZZR600

If lights don't dim and cluster doesnt blank then check kick stand switch or tip over snsor. My bets are on a loose or faulty kick stand switch.

has the tank been off?
could be a pinched fuel line, once the bike sits the carbs re fill

The previous owner left the bike sitting for a 1.5yrs. Does that cost a lot to fix? I'm gonna bring it to hertiage autoshop tomorrow morning and see what the problem is.

Check what caboose said before you take it to a shop. This happened to me before. Also clean your terminals while you're at it.

Check the idle settings. It happen to me once - the bike was shutting down once I stop at the light. When I came back and checked, the idle screw was somehow turned all way off - somebodyprobably made a joke:angry4:

I think I found the main problem. I'm an idiot, that doesnt know how to use carbs. Turns out the whole problem was me not warming up my bike enough. My first bike was fuel injected so give me a break =) . Funny thing was this whole mess probably saved me a speeding ticket, I remember getting off work yesterday and just ripping it through the street and the engine died. Pulled over to the side of the road and a cop pulled out 20 seconds later.

Doesn't sound like thats the problem if you were already ripping down the street and your bike just shuts off. Hope it doesn't happen again though.

based on your sig, I'll assume you bought an 04 blade. Get the service manual (1000rr.net) and have a look at the wiring diagram. On the 08 there are only a few things that would typically cause this, I imagine they are similar for the 04

1.) faulty tip over sensor
2.) kick stand sensor
3.) kill switch
4.) faulty/phantom ground
5.) battery/battery connection
6.) fuel supply

The tip over sensor, kill switch and kickstand switches can be bypassed. Eliminate the variables 1 at a time by by-passing them (temporarily of course, do not ride without these). Use a multi meter to verify your voltage after your terminals. I had an issue on the 08 with poor terminal connections on the battery. Check your fuel supply pressure and hose for pinches.

You really need to provide more detail, is the behavior consistent, i.e. you go WOT, is it intermittent, do you loose your dash/lights/power, is it dimming or just a shut off, does power come back on right away or intermittently? How does the engine fire? with a vengance or does it turn over a bunch of times first and feel weak?

If its firing up right away after it dies, faulty sensor/kill switch, phantom ground or loose connector, use some di-electric grease. If its only dying WOT, likely fuel supply. If it turns over weak, battery. These are just suggestions.

Does the engine instantly shut off or do you loose power slowly?

The first is usually electrical the second is has to do with a choke point in fuel delivery.

His bike is a 08 ZZR600. Mines a 04 1000RR.
Unless you mean that the Kawi 08 ZZR is very similar to the Honda 04 1000RR.
But I agree with your points.
On my old 04 600RR I had problems with my BAS (bank angle sensor/tip sensor) which caused it to not start. Never had it shutoff on me while riding due to the tip sensor. That was due to a loose battery connection.
You can bypass the tip sensor by jumping it to test it.

I was riding fine yesterday after my friend told me to warm it up properly. If I remember correctly, the engine shuts off at random, low and high rpms. Im not sure about the lights though. I'm able to start the bike up right after it shuts off, but makes a popping sound from the exhaust. I'll take it to the shop just in case.

You said it had been sitting. I would suggest changing the plugs might have some issues with one or two of them going. If its beed sitting that long i would do that regardless of problems or not.

on my old Kawi zx6r, there is a small little ignition wire under the top triple. over time from wear/tear and whatever deterioration (maybe even from parking downtown and passers by fiddling with the bike) the wire broke. could not find the issue for a while splicing and testing nearly every wire on the bike, until eventually locating that wire. reconnected it, soldered and never had an issue after that. double check and make sure ignition wiring intact and not corroded/damaged.
