Engine died under Hard Acceration

Hey guys

Had a bit of a scare yesterday, was on my 2007 GSXR 600 and was getting off the lakeshore exit and onto the Gardiner ramp when I overtook a slow truck and put the bike under hard throttle. All of a sudden the engine turned off on me. I was at around 12k rpm and accelerating hard. I just had done an oil change the night before, putting semi synthetic 10w40 as per salesman at Cycle World. I put 2200 ml (or 2.2 liters measured precisely) and a new oil filter. I initially thought I had not tightened the oil filter but there was no oil leaking on the bike, and the bike turned on fine after that. I babied it home but now I'm afraid of pushing it hard.. which is too bad considering its an SS and sometimes I'd want to go into the upper revs. I also thought it could've been the battery but the battery terminal was tight and everything looked good.

I did at the time have my heated jacket and gloves plugged into the battery. Is this a common issue with the gixxers? The bike is all stock except akropovik full exhaust system and HIDs.

heated jacket, and gloves + HID is a pretty significant load on the charging system and at high RPM there is even more load generated.

Did the engine shut off immediately? or slowly lose RPM?

Is there a chance you hit the kill switch accidentally?(it happens a lot)

The engine turned off immediately. Pretty sure I didnt hit the kill switch, but then again, who knows for certain. I'm suspecting maybe the kickstand may have been pulled down a bit, or the sensor acting up around it?

Kickstand switch... 100% guaranteed that this is your problem.

An unrelated point regarding the 2200 ml oil change... what about checking the dipstick?

I vote for kickstand switch or kill switch.

Tho I'm questioning the amount of oil. I don't have a gixxer, but my zx6 takes over 3l

Or sight glass? It's got to have one or the other, no?

Nah, gixxer riders are really cool, they just pour oil by eye.

Your service manual should tell you for sure how much oil your bikes takes when the filter is being changed. My old suzuki service manual and new Honda manual all have three different amounts of oil for three different types of changes.

It's got a sight glass but its impossible to view it. I'm gonna find the PDF of the manual, I put in 2200 ML or 2.2 liters (i also changed the filter).

What do you mean? What is making it impossible to view it? - confused.

How did you get the bike home? what happened after it "All of a sudden the engine turned off on me." Did it just fire back up without issue?

The 600's and 750's are around 2.6L or 2.8L on gsxr's....kawi's are almost 3.3L or so

its the charging system. The same thing happened to me this morning. These gixxers are notorious for crappy stators. This is my second time I need to replace in having the bike 6 years. The first time it only lasted 2 years. It's about $600+ to replace the stator/rectifier (parts plus labour).

How do you know its the same.
The OP rode the bike home, he didn't mention how he got it re-started. It may have started right up for all we know, which would not point to a charging system problem.

The bike started right up. I know all about the suzuki stator problems, had a sv650 before this gixxer and had to replace the stator. If it's gonna cost $600 to replace, and it's sure to eventually die on me, I'm better off selling this bike now. Maybe i'll just stick to CBR's.

Is there any way to know if the stator is about to fail? I've ridden a few times after that incident and the bike has been riding fine. Right now, I'm thinking its the kickstand switch that may have dropped a bit. But if its a stator issue, that's cause for concern.

Having an engine die suddenly while riding, and then fire back up with no issues after stopping on the side of the road, does not in any way point towards a stator or charging system issue.
Have you inspected the kickstand and switch? does the stand move freely, or bind? is the stand spring correctly installed, and working normally?

On my DRZ, the sidestand switch was a problem going over jumps and stuff, so I bypassed it - never had an issue on either of my GSX-R's
