Ending a policy.

I asked my broker how to not let my policy renew on the 20th. He said we could do it on the phone. He read me some stuff which I had to reply "I agree" and apparently that's it. Should I call back to get him to FAX or email me to confirm that it is not going to renew or is what I did safe?

It did not renew. Ending a policy over the phone and not having to sign anything was new to me.

I know you "should" do it in writing, but I have never done anything but communicate via the phone my wish not to renew.

When I get my brokers voice mail the message is that changes to coverage can not be made over the phone. That said, the worst that could happen if they didn't cancel your policy is that you would owe them a bit of money. What would worry me is if I added a bike verbally and it didn't get registered to the policy. In that case I would be personally responsible for damages if I had a crash.

I had a problem with Jevco where they refused to cancel my insurance until I proved to them I had insurance from another company. I'm sure they were just being pricks. I now fax a letter to my insurance company stating I wish to cancel my insurance, dated, with my signature. I also print a fax confirmation page.

With a reputable company dealing with reputable people this is unnecessary, but the real world may be different.
